Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC)
Instrumental transcommunication (ITC) is the claimed reception of voices, images, or text through electronic devices, with no physical explanation for where they came from. Some researchers attribute these signals to non-physical or deceased sources. ITC extends the older idea of electronic voice phenomena (EVP), which covers strange voices on audio recordings, into video, telephone, computer, and radio channels. The field is deeply contested. Proponents point to decades of recorded oddities and some controlled studies. Skeptics argue the evidence reduces to misheard noise and wishful thinking.
Key findings
- Konstantin Raudive made tens of thousands of recordings of voice-like sounds in tape hiss during the late 1960s and early 1970s, sparking wide interest in EVP and ITC.22
- The Spiricom device, built by George Meek and Bill O’Neil in the 1980s, claimed real-time two-way voice contact with a deceased scientist. The results were never independently replicated.25
- A controlled pilot study using EVPMaker software found no objective difference between sessions run by an experienced ITC operator and control sessions run without any operator. This suggests that perceived voices are a subjective experience, not an external signal.3
- A structured review of nine types of survival evidence gave EVP and ITC no higher than a mid-range grade, below mental and physical mediumship.4
- Telephone contact with deceased individuals has been documented in case collections across several countries. A subset of cases remained unexplained after researchers interviewed witnesses.10
- One hundred and twenty-one years of direct experimental tests of survival, including ITC-related methods, have not produced results that compel mainstream scientific acceptance.15
Overview
EVP and ITC share a common starting point. Electronic devices sometimes seem to produce sounds, images, or text that no one deliberately created. EVP is the narrower term. It covers strange voices found on audio recordings. ITC is the broader umbrella. It includes voices in radio static, faces on television screens, text arriving on computers, and voices on phone calls. Researchers in the field attribute all of these to non-physical sources.2
ITC sits at the crossroads of parapsychology and the question of whether consciousness survives death. Even ordinary claims of mind-to-mind communication are controversial. ITC goes further. It claims the information comes not from any living mind, but from the deceased. That makes it one of the most contested areas in an already contested field.4
Deeper dive: ITC within the survival evidence landscape
A 2021 structured review by Dean Radin graded nine categories of survival evidence using a hierarchy adapted from medical evidence standards. EVP and ITC received no grade-A rating. The highest grades went to mental mediumship (B+) and physical mediumship (B+). The review drew on a survey of 422 academic scientists who were asked which experimental designs would be most persuasive if successful. Out-of-body and near-death experience experiments ranked first, followed by mediumship and reincarnation. ITC was listed as an eligible methodology in the Bigelow Institute’s 2023 grants program, which offered up to one million dollars for research into post-mortem communication.411
From Tape Hiss to Two-Way Contact: The Research History
The modern ITC story begins with audio tape. In the late 1960s, Latvian-born researcher Konstantin Raudive recorded what he described as voices buried in tape hiss and radio static. He built up more than 70,000 such recordings and published his findings in a book that drew wide attention across Europe.22 Raudive believed the voices belonged to deceased individuals. Critics pointed out that he spent enormous time listening to ambiguous noise. That is exactly the kind of activity most likely to produce false positives.
Deeper dive: Raudive’s methods and reception
Raudive worked with Friedrich Jurgenson, who had earlier reported hearing strange voices on recordings of birdsong. Raudive’s 1971 English-language book, Breakthrough, described his procedures and included audio examples. A review issue of the European Journal of Parapsychology examined the Raudive voice phenomena after the book appeared, showing the level of serious attention his claims received in parapsychological circles at the time.3144 Italian parapsychologist Piero Cassoli also noted Raudive’s work in a 1969 survey of Italian parapsychology, showing the international reach of the claims.45
The next major development came in the 1980s with the Spiricom device. George Meek and psychic operator Bill O’Neil claimed to have achieved real-time, two-way voice contact with a deceased scientist. They identified him as Dr. George Jeffries Mueller. The device used a radio frequency range combined with audio tones. Meek’s Metascience Foundation reported more than eleven years of research leading to this result.25 No independent lab was able to replicate the Spiricom results. The recordings were never analyzed under conditions that could rule out normal explanations.
Deeper dive: Spiricom and the Scole Experiment
The Spiricom Mark IV reportedly operated in the 30 to 130 MHz range with audio frequencies. It required a psychic operator, meaning results depended on one specific person being present. This design makes independent replication structurally difficult. Any failure can be blamed on the absence of the right operator rather than on a flaw in the device.25 The Scole Experiment (1993 to 1998) reported video and image phenomena alongside other physical mediumship effects. The Society for Psychical Research investigated and produced a divided report. Some investigators found the evidence suggestive. Others identified serious flaws in how the sessions were run. ITC is listed alongside apparitions, mediumship, and near-death experiences as one of the evidence categories relevant to survival research in several scholarly reviews.3036
Telephone contact with deceased individuals is a distinct but related strand of ITC research. Case collectors in the 1960s and 1980s gathered accounts of phone calls apparently coming from dead individuals. Some calls came through phones that were disconnected. After interviewing witnesses, a substantial fraction of cases remained without a conventional explanation.10
Deeper dive: Telephone case collections
Bayless and Rogo collected 50 cases in the 1960s and sorted them into types: simple calls with few words, prolonged conversations, calls answered by unknown deceased persons, and cases involving disconnected phones. In the 1980s, Massimo Biondi collected 40 Italian cases. After interviewing receivers and witnesses, 20 cases remained unexplained. A reviewer of Cooper’s 2013 book on the subject noted that most people who experienced such calls had never previously heard of the phenomenon. That argues against simple expectation effects in those cases. Cases of this kind appear to be extremely rare compared to other reported forms of after-death contact.10
Researcher Anabela Cardoso developed a method she calls direct radio voice (DRV) reception. Voices are claimed to emerge from radio static in real time. She reported that parapsychologist David Fontana verified some of her sessions, including cases where voices repeated English sentences he dictated to them. She also conducted a study at an acoustics laboratory in Spain, which she describes as producing positive results under controlled conditions.2
What Happens When ITC Is Tested Rigorously?
Electronic noise is random. The human brain is very good at finding patterns in randomness. Hearing a voice in static is not evidence that a voice is actually there. To test whether ITC voices are real, researchers need to show that the voices are objectively present in the audio. They cannot simply rely on what a motivated listener reports hearing. A 2011 pilot study by Boccuzzi and Beischel tried to do exactly that.3
The study used software called EVPMaker. This software generates a stream of random speech fragments called allophones. Think of allophones as the basic building blocks of spoken sound: short clips of vowels and consonants assembled in random order. An experienced ITC operator listened to the output. She reported hearing meaningful phrases and responses to questions she posed. The researchers then compared her sessions against control sessions recorded without any operator present. They used four different methods to check whether the operator’s sessions were objectively different from the controls.3
None of the four methods found a difference. The operator’s sessions and the control sessions were statistically indistinguishable. A listening panel of nearly 100 people heard words in both types of session at similar rates. Speech recognition software could not detect the specific phrases the operator reported hearing. The researchers concluded that the perception of meaningful communication was a subjective process, not evidence of an external source.3

Deeper dive: Study design and statistical results
Boccuzzi and Beischel analyzed 10 Active Sessions (run by an experienced operator) and 10 Control Sessions (recorded by investigators without an operator). They used a standardized data collection platform with security monitoring to prevent tampering. Statistical analysis of allophone frequencies found no significant differences between Active and Control sessions (p = 0.38, meaning results this similar would occur by chance 38 times in 100 tries, far above the conventional threshold of 5 in 100). A blinded listening panel of 98 participants rated 20 audio samples. Participants reported hearing recognizable words in 73% of Active Session samples versus 63% of Control samples. That difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.12, meaning it would occur by chance 12 times in 100 tries). The mean consensus score for participant responses was 1.15 out of a possible 3.0 hit threshold. Content analysis of 124 operator-perceived responses found that only 34% received high relevance scores, while 31% received no-fit scores, with an overall mean of 1.56 out of the possible maximum. Responses did not consistently match questions. Speech recognition software trained on the SpeakJet voice chip received an average score of 1.5 for operator-perceived phrases but 3.8 for coded SpeakJet translations (p = 0.0002, meaning this difference would occur by chance only about 2 times in 10,000 tries). This shows that the phrases the operator heard were not actually present in the audio output.3
This study is the most carefully controlled test of real-time ITC in the published literature. Its results do not prove that ITC never occurs under any conditions. But they do show that one experienced operator’s sessions, under careful monitoring, produced no objectively detectable anomaly. That is a significant finding. Future ITC research would need to meet or exceed this standard.3
Skeptical Critiques and Discussion
Critique 1: ITC voices are pareidolia: the brain hearing patterns in noise
Pareidolia is the tendency to perceive meaningful shapes or sounds in random or ambiguous stimuli. Hearing a face in clouds or a voice in static are classic examples. Critics argue that ITC researchers are doing exactly this. The effect gets stronger when listeners are told in advance what phrase to listen for.3
The Boccuzzi and Beischel study directly tested this. Blinded listeners who were not told what to expect still reported hearing words in both Active and Control sessions at similar rates. This fits the pareidolia explanation rather than genuine anomalous content. The study found that consensus among listeners does not provide evidence for anomalous communication.3

Critique 2: ITC research systematically ignores negative results
Skeptic Keith Augustine argues that survival research, including ITC, shows a pattern of collecting only data that might confirm the hypothesis while ignoring or explaining away negative results. He describes this as a feature of pseudoscience rather than science. He also notes that 121 years of direct experimental tests of survival have not produced replicable, compelling results.15
Proponents point to controlled studies such as Cardoso’s acoustics laboratory work as evidence that ITC researchers do attempt rigorous testing.2 The Boccuzzi and Beischel study was conducted by researchers sympathetic to the field. It produced a null result and was published. This suggests that at least some ITC researchers are willing to report negative findings.3
Evidence strength: moderate (the publication bias concern is legitimate; the field’s track record on replication is poor)
Critique 3: Radio interference and broadcast contamination explain many ITC voices
Radio-based ITC methods, including direct radio voice reception, use devices that can easily pick up stray broadcasts. A voice heard in radio static could be a fragment of a distant transmission. Critics argue that ruling out broadcast contamination requires shielded environments and frequency monitoring. Most ITC researchers do not use these precautions.3
Cardoso reports that her DRV sessions were conducted under conditions she describes as controlled. She says the voices respond in real time to questions in ways that would be hard to explain as random broadcast fragments.2 However, independent verification of the shielding conditions and frequency monitoring used in those sessions has not been published in peer-reviewed form in a way that allows full evaluation.
Evidence strength: strong (broadcast contamination is a real and unresolved problem in most radio-based ITC research)
Critique 4: Eyewitness testimony and personal conviction are unreliable evidence
Augustine notes that survival evidence, including ITC, relies heavily on witness testimony. He cites data from the Innocence Project showing that 69% of wrongful convictions involved eyewitness mistakes. Personal conviction about an anomalous experience is not a reliable guide to what actually happened.15
ITC researchers argue that some cases involve multiple independent witnesses and verifiable content. The telephone case collections include instances where witnesses were interviewed after the fact. A subset of cases remained unexplained even under scrutiny.10 The question is whether unexplained means genuinely anomalous or simply not yet fully investigated.

Where the Field Stands Today
ITC holds an unusual position in parapsychology. It draws more popular interest than almost any other claimed phenomenon. Electronic devices are familiar, and the idea of receiving a message from a deceased person is emotionally powerful. Yet ITC has the weakest controlled evidence base of the major survival-related phenomena.4
The one rigorous controlled study in the published literature found no objective evidence of anomalous content in an experienced operator’s sessions.3 That study used a specific software-based method. It cannot be taken as a definitive test of all ITC approaches. But it shows how hard it is to separate genuine anomaly from subjective perception when the raw material is random noise.
Deeper dive: Methodological standards the field needs to meet
For ITC research to advance, several standards would need to be met consistently. First, blinding: listeners who evaluate recordings should not know which sessions are claimed to contain anomalous content. Second, randomization: the order of target and control sessions should be set by a process that neither the operator nor the evaluators can predict or influence. Third, replication: results should be reproducible by independent researchers in different labs. Fourth, broadcast contamination controls: radio-based methods should be run in electromagnetically shielded environments with frequency monitoring. The Boccuzzi and Beischel study met the first three of these standards and found null results.3 A book review of Mark Cowden’s ITC work noted that insufficient experimental detail, absence of controls, and dismissal of scientific method made it impossible to assess the authenticity of his claimed results.1 The reviewer also noted that there may not be a one-size-fits-all approach to ITC. If results depend on the specific operator, device, and conditions, designing a replicable protocol becomes very difficult.1
Funding for ITC research remains sparse. A 2021 survey found that survival research broadly is largely an unfunded activity pursued by only a few dozen scientists worldwide at any given time.4 The Bigelow Institute’s 2023 grants program listed ITC as an eligible methodology and offered substantial funding. This may produce new controlled studies in the coming years.11
Here is the honest summary. ITC has a long and colorful history. A small number of researchers take it seriously. One controlled study found no evidence of anomalous content. The phenomenon has not been proven impossible. It has simply not been shown under conditions that rule out the most obvious alternative explanations. That gap between popular conviction and controlled evidence is the central unresolved problem in the field.315
Deeper dive: ITC in the broader context of survival research
A 2021 adversarial collaboration between a survival advocate and a skeptic used a modified Drake Equation to estimate what fraction of survival-related phenomena remain unexplained after accounting for known confounds. Those confounds included expectancy effects, environmental factors, fraud, measurement error, mental illness, and susceptibility factors. The model estimated that known confounds account for roughly 61.4% of reported phenomena, leaving about 39% unexplained. ITC was not separately modeled in that analysis. But the framework illustrates the general problem: a large fraction of anomalous reports can be explained by known psychological and procedural factors. The residual unexplained fraction is hard to interpret without better-controlled data.79 A review of survival evidence categories noted that the psi-versus-survival question must be considered when evaluating ITC. Even if anomalous information were present in a recording, it would not automatically follow that the source was a deceased person rather than a living person’s unconscious psi ability.4
