Mediumship

Mediumship is the claimed capacity to obtain information about deceased persons or to receive communications purportedly originating from them. Parapsychology distinguishes mental mediumship (information received via subjective impressions, visions, voices, thoughts) from physical mediumship (putative physical manifestations, materializations, direct voice, telekinesis). Modern research focuses almost exclusively on mental mediumship under tightly controlled protocols designed to block sensory leakage, cold reading, and expectancy effects.

Overview

Mediumship is the claimed ability to gather information about deceased people or to receive messages said to come from them. Parapsychology splits the topic into two kinds. Mental mediumship covers information that arrives as private impressions: pictures, voices, or thoughts in the medium’s mind. Physical mediumship covers claimed bodily-world events such as materializations, voices heard in the room, and objects that move. Modern laboratory work studies mental mediumship almost entirely, using tight protocols meant to block sensory leakage, cold reading, and the medium’s own guesswork.

The crucial distinction in this research is what the data can and cannot show. A controlled study asks whether a medium produces accurate, hard-to-explain information about a specific deceased person. Survival of consciousness is one reading of a positive result. The competing reading, often called super-psi, holds that the living medium gathers the information by ordinary psi from living sources or records.[1] The field’s serious scholars treat these as separate questions and resist collapsing them.[2]

Phenomenology: what is reported

Mediums describe two broad working states. In a reading for a deceased target, they report a trance-like quality and a sense of warmth or affection toward the communicator. In a psychic reading for a living person, the experience feels somewhat different. A blinded study comparing these states found measurable differences in the mediums’ reported experiences, with higher love scores and trance-like features in both psi conditions than in a control task.[3]

Nineteenth-century spiritualists already noticed that messages seemed shaped by the medium‘s own mind. They argued that a medium’s mental traits color and distort whatever is supposedly transmitted, an early insight later echoed by formal psychical researchers.[4] Reports of physical mediumship, by contrast, center on dramatic room events such as table levitations and apported objects.[5]

History of the label

Systematic study of mediums began with the Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882, which set out to investigate mediumistic claims with documentation and controls rather than belief. The most thoroughly examined period ran from the 1880s to the 1930s, the so-called heyday of mental mediumship, when investigators recorded detailed sittings with figures such as Leonora Piper.[6] One recent historical account argues that the best of these cases withstand common criticisms and remain difficult to dismiss.[7]

The early literature was vast. Nandor Fodor’s encyclopedia of the period gathered more than 900 entries on mediums, researchers, and phenomena, and still serves as a reference for the state of the field before 1933.[8] Materialization research had national flavors: French investigators at the Institut Métapsychique International pursued physical phenomena in the 1920s along lines distinct from the English tradition.[9] Studies of apport claims from the late 1920s and 1930s, however, were later shown to contain serious methodological loopholes.[10]

How it is studied

The modern laboratory model isolates the medium from every normal source of information. A blinded protocol developed for this purpose keeps the medium, the experimenter present at the reading, and the sitter who rates the transcript all unaware of the relevant details, so that cold reading, rater bias, and experimenter cueing cannot account for any accuracy.[11] The optimal-conditions approach pairs a motivated sitter, who wants contact with a particular deceased person, with a medium who never meets or sees them.

An analysis of eight recent triple-blind experiments found that certain design features tend to raise accuracy: choosing experienced mediums, recruiting motivated sitters, allowing a little information disclosure, asking objective questions, and keeping the rating task at a moderate load.[12] Researchers have also built measurement tools for the field, including a validated survey of awareness and experience of psi phenomena that uses neutral, descriptive language.[13]

Evidence summary

The afterlife experiments of the early 2000s, conducted by gary-e-schwartz and colleagues, brought mediumship back into the laboratory and drew wide attention, though their controls were later judged loose by critics. Subsequent work tightened the design substantially. The blinded protocol pioneered by Julie Beischel with Schwartz, and the optimal-methodology framework that followed, became the template for the field.

Mediums reported accurate, specific information about deceased individuals under quadruple-blind conditions that ruled out cold reading, rater bias, experimenter cueing, and fraud.[11]

Replication followed. A later study reported that research mediums again produced anomalous information reception under blinded conditions, extending the earlier finding rather than standing alone.[11] Results across laboratories are not uniform, and the review of triple-blind work found divergent outcomes that hinge on method.[12] On the physical side, supervised investigation of one séance circle concluded that some table levitations stayed hard to explain even after fraud was uncovered elsewhere in the same group.[5]

Skeptical critiques

The strongest theoretical objection is not fraud but super-psi: that the refined psi of living people could, in principle, produce everything a survival reading would predict, leaving survival as an extra and unneeded assumption.[1] Stephen E. Braude has pressed this point for decades, arguing that survival evidence faces a serious conceptual problem in explaining how a disembodied person could perceive the physical world at all.[14]

A separate line of criticism holds that survival research fails scientific standards by favoring positive cases and setting aside neuroscience that ties mind to brain.[15] Defenders reply that such critiques recycle old arguments and ignore the strongest material.[16] A later review of the whole debate judged that survival arguments suffer from genuine gaps in evidential criteria and logical structure, and that progress depends on clearer standards of proof.[17] Physical mediumship carries a long record of exposure: documented fraudulent devices appear even in circles that also produce puzzling effects, and the famous Mirabelli case mixed apparent genuine phenomena with demonstrated trickery.[18]

Current status

Mental mediumship under blinded controls remains the active research front, and several scholars argue it deserves serious attention across disciplines rather than reflexive dismissal.[2] An adversarial team of skeptics and agnostics has proposed a preregistered mediumship study designed to settle whether anomalous information reception holds up, framing it as a test of methodology rather than a search for proof of survival.[19]

The survival-versus-super-psi question stays open by design, because the data on accuracy do not by themselves choose between the two readings.[1] Surveys of academics suggest that even successful experiments would move the undecided more than the committed, and that evidence alone may not resolve the deeper interpretive split.[20] One adversarial modeling effort estimated that known skeptical confounds leave a sizeable share of survival-related reports unexplained, a finding both sides continue to debate.[21] Braude’s collected essays capture the field’s cautious mood: take the best cases seriously, keep the controls strict, and resist easy conclusions in either direction.[22]
