Watt hypothesized that these individual differences in cognitive style would correlate with ESP performance, with vigilant individuals showing stronger psi effects. In a series of forced-choice ESP studies, Watt measured participants’ perceptual defense/vigilance using implicit and explicit measures and correlated these with ESP scores. Results supported the hypothesis: participants scoring high on vigilance showed significantly better ESP performance than those scoring high on defense.3 This finding suggested that psi expression is mediated by unconscious cognitive processes and that individual differences in how people process information shape their ability to access anomalous information.

Watt’s work on experimenter effects demonstrated that the expectations and beliefs of the experimenter conducting a psi study significantly influence both participants’ paranormal beliefs and their psi performance. In a study with Richard Wiseman, Watt found that experimenters who believed in psi obtained significantly higher ESP scores from participants than experimenters who were skeptical, even when the experimental protocol was identical.5 This finding underscores the importance of blind or automated experimental procedures in parapsychology and highlights how subtle experimenter cues can influence outcomes.

More recently, Watt has conducted pre-registered ganzfeld ESP studies with selected participants, individuals who report prior psi experiences or who score high on measures associated with psi performance. The study employed sensory attenuation (the ganzfeld protocol, in which participants receive uniform visual and auditory stimulation) and measured both ESP performance and alterations in consciousness during the session. Results showed significant ESP effects, with selected participants outperforming chance expectation.2 The study was pre-registered, meaning the hypotheses and analysis plan were specified in advance, reducing the risk of bias from post-hoc data exploration.

Precognitive dreaming and anomalous cognition

Watt has made substantial contributions to the study of precognitive dreaming, the apparent ability of dreams to contain information about future events. In a controlled sleep-laboratory study, Watt and colleagues monitored participants’ dreams and tested whether dream content contained information about randomly selected target images that would be presented after the dream period ended. In another investigation, Watt tested the implicit processing hypothesis, the idea that precognitive information is processed unconsciously and only later becomes conscious. Using eye-tracking methodology, Watt found evidence that participants’ visual attention was influenced by precognitive information before they consciously perceived it, supporting the hypothesis that psi operates through implicit, automatic cognitive processes.11

Paranormal belief and mental health

In a study of cognitive and psychological mediators of anxiety, Watt found that paranormal belief was associated with anxiety and perceived loss of control in childhood.4 This suggests that belief in the paranormal may serve a coping function, allowing individuals who experienced early loss of control to regain a sense of agency or predictability in an uncertain world. Watt’s work also examined the relationship between paranormal belief and mental boundaries, the psychological distinction between self and other, reality and fantasy. In collaboration with Thomas Rabeyron, Watt found that paranormal experiences and beliefs were associated with more permeable mental boundaries, which in turn correlated with both positive outcomes (creativity, openness) and negative outcomes (anxiety, dissociation).12

Watt has also investigated paranormal belief in the context of health and healing. In a study of arthritis sufferers, Watt and colleagues examined whether belief in paranormal healing and paranormal belief more broadly were associated with physical and psychological well-being. Results showed complex relationships: paranormal belief was associated with both higher anxiety and higher perceived control, suggesting that belief in the paranormal has multifaceted psychological effects.13

Distant healing and treatment expectancy

Watt has conducted rigorous studies of distant healing (the practice of sending healing intentions to a person at a distance) examining the role of expectancy and belief in healing outcomes. In a study of arthritis sufferers, Watt and colleagues randomly assigned participants to receive either genuine distant healing or sham distant healing, while manipulating whether participants knew which condition they were in. Results showed that treatment knowledge (whether participants believed they were receiving genuine healing) significantly affected outcomes, with participants who believed they were receiving genuine healing showing greater improvement in pain and function.6 This finding highlights the importance of expectancy effects in healing studies and suggests that the psychological context of treatment is as important as any putative anomalous mechanism.
