Altered States and Psi Performance
Across a quarter-century of laboratory work, Charles Honorton pursued a single organizing idea: that anomalous information transfer becomes more detectable when the receiver’s ordinary sensory and cognitive traffic is quieted. This spoke traces that programme, from dreams and hypnosis through meditation and progressive relaxation to the ganzfeld, and the theoretical “noise-reduction” model Honorton built to explain why internal attention states should matter.

Overview
Honorton’s career, from his late-1960s card-guessing work through the automated ganzfeld at Psychophysical Research Laboratories, was organized around one hypothesis: that psi is a weak signal ordinarily masked by the noise of patterned sensory input and active cognition, so that quieting that noise should raise the signal’s detectability. The effects he chased are characteristically small and state-dependent, the same outcome can shift with a participant’s absorption, relaxation, or prior selection, which is precisely why a single null run cannot settle the question and why he built whole programmes around moderating variables rather than single dramatic demonstrations. His preferred interpretation, that internal attention states are genuinely psi-conducive, was always one reading of the data; alternatives such as response bias and selective reporting were live throughout, and Honorton engaged them directly.
The State-Dependence Problem
Honorton’s review work emphasized that at least two of every three spontaneous psi reports, and a comparable ratio of significant experimental studies, involved internal-state measures rather than waking forced-choice procedures, a pattern he read as evidence that reduced sensory functioning and inward-directed attention facilitate detection.1 Because the hypothesized facilitator is a fluctuating psychological state rather than a fixed trait, effect sizes are expected to vary with induction success, making the paradigm sample- and state-dependent rather than uniformly replicable.6
The noise-reduction model
The theoretical core of Honorton’s altered-states programme was a noise-reduction account: ordinary perceptual, somatic, and cognitive activity competes with weak psi inputs for the receiver’s attention, so reducing that competing activity should make psi-mediated imagery and ideation more likely to surface into awareness. He set out a four-stage requirement, detection, discrimination, retention, confirmation, that any psi input must satisfy to reach conscious report, and used it to explain why psi appears disproportionately in dreams, crises, and other nonordinary states.1
Patanjali and the Limbs of Attenuation
Honorton mapped his noise-reduction framework onto the eight “limbs” of Patanjali’s Raja yoga, reading the system as a graded inhibition of the modifications of the mind. He noted that experimental psi-conducive-states research to that point had focused almost exclusively on the fifth-stage register, reduction of sensory-somatic distraction through REM sleep, meditation, hypnosis, progressive relaxation, and ganzfeld stimulation, while the later stages of sustained single-pointed concentration (dharana, dhyana, samadhi) remained largely unexplored experimentally.5 His preferred interpretation treated the Yoga Sutras as an empirical taxonomy of attenuation depth rather than as metaphysics; the mechanism he proposed, progressive noise reduction, remained a model, not an established cause.7
From Theory to Replicability Strategy
Honorton tied the noise-reduction model to a practical replicability agenda, arguing that identifying the conditions reliably associated with ESP performance, receiver state, sender relationship, target dynamism, was the route to dependable effects rather than chasing single gifted subjects.8 His broader writing on experimenter influence framed replicability itself as an empirical object of study, conceding that experimenter and state effects could confound naive replication attempts.9
Dreams, hypnosis, and early internal-state work
Before the ganzfeld, Honorton’s internal-state research ran through sleep and hypnosis. At the Maimonides Dream Laboratory he collaborated with Krippner and Ullman on dream-telepathy and precognitive-dream studies, where sleeping receivers attempted to incorporate a remote sender’s target imagery into their dreams, the dreaming state serving as a naturally occurring attenuation of waking sensory input.10 In parallel he pursued hypnotically induced clairvoyant dreams, treating hypnotic suggestion as a route into the same inward-directed register.11
Precognitive Dreams and Partial Attenuation
The Maimonides precognitive-dream programme included single-subject series in which a receiver attempted to dream content matching a target experience selected only after the dream night.1213 Honorton’s transitional study of shifts in subjective state under partial sensory attenuation tracked GESP against self-reported state change, an early step toward the ganzfeld’s deliberate reduction of patterned input.2 He also reported a positive relationship between frequency of dream recall and ESP scoring, consistent with the claim that openness to internal imagery predicts performance.14
EEG Alpha and Physiological Correlates
In his early card-guessing work Honorton examined whether EEG alpha activity, a marker of relaxed, eyes-closed wakefulness, tracked ESP performance, an attempt to give the internal-state hypothesis a physiological anchor.15 He also studied manifest anxiety and ESP, reading high arousal as a source of cognitive noise antagonistic to scoring.16 These correlational results were exploratory and the proposed mechanism, that low-arousal states reduce competing internal noise, remained an interpretation rather than a demonstrated cause.
Meditation, relaxation, and PK
Honorton extended the noise-reduction logic from ESP reception to psychokinesis, testing whether meditative and relaxation states facilitated influence on random or physical systems. He ran pilot PK work with experienced meditators, including a Transcendental Meditation instructor and Japa yoga practitioners, pairing induction with feedback, on the premise that the quieted, single-pointed state ought to support intentional effects as well as receptive ones.17
Muscle Tension, Relaxation, and Concentration Mode
Honorton directly manipulated bodily and attentional state in PK tasks, comparing waking suggestions for muscle tension against relaxation, and active against passive concentration, in both individual and group settings.1819 The Japa yoga practitioner series paired meditation with PK feedback to test whether disciplined inward attention raised performance.20 These were explicitly preliminary studies; their small samples and pilot status mean they carry suggestive rather than confirmatory weight.
Internal Attention States as a Selection Variable
The forced-choice precognition meta-analysis with Ferrari, drawing on 309 studies by 62 investigators and nearly two million trials, reported a small but reliable overall effect and identified four moderating variables, selected versus unselected subjects, individual versus group testing, presence of trial-by-trial feedback, and short versus long response-to-target interval, whose combined impact was strong; the seven of eight studies combining selection, individual testing, and feedback were independently significant.3 Honorton read these moderators as consistent with the noise-reduction picture: conditions that focus and motivate an individual receiver outperform diffuse group testing. A selective-reporting alternative was tested by computing a file-drawer ratio, roughly 46 unreported null studies per reported study would be needed to nullify the effect, and no systematic relationship was found between outcome and eight indices of research quality.21
Extraversion and Receptive Performance
Honorton, Ferrari, and Bem reported a meta-analytic association between extraversion and ESP performance together with a new confirming dataset, locating a stable personality moderator of free-response scoring.422 Within the ganzfeld first-timer work the most consistent finding over a decade was a “liking effect”, psi-hitting participants rated their actual targets more favorably than psi-missing participants did, which Honorton treated as a state-and-trait signature of conducive receivers rather than a judging artifact.23
Ganzfeld as engineered attenuation
The ganzfeld was Honorton’s attempt to manufacture the psi-conducive state on demand rather than wait for it to occur spontaneously. By covering the eyes with halved translucent spheres and delivering white noise through headphones, the procedure produces a uniform, unpatterned field of light and sound, sensory attenuation, not deprivation, designed to lower the perceptual noise floor while leaving the participant fully awake and able to report ongoing imagery.24 Honorton presented this as the direct experimental realization of his noise-reduction model: a controlled, repeatable induction of the inward-directed attention his dream and meditation work had implicated.
Early Ganzfeld Confirmations and First-Timer Outcomes
The first published psi-ganzfeld paper with Harper framed the procedure as one for regulating perceptual input to facilitate psi-mediated imagery, and was followed by confirmatory information-retrieval studies.2425 A small first-timer group of 25 subjects given a psi-conducive relaxation tape produced 11 direct hits where 6.25 were expected by chance (Z = 1.963, p < .025, one-tailed); the group also reported strong belief in ESP and compatibility between the relaxation induction and their meditation practice.23 Honorton’s preferred reading was that the relaxation induction raised performance among already-receptive participants; he and colleagues noted that inexperienced participants still yielded significant overall scoring, encouraging for replicators who could not pre-screen for talent.
Information Rate and the Receiver’s Mentation
Honorton attempted to quantify psi reception as an information-transfer rate using pictorial stimuli, treating the ganzfeld mentation as a channel whose capacity could be estimated rather than merely scored hit-or-miss.26 This reflected his broader information-retrieval framing: psi as transfer between external events and “sensorially-noncontingent” internal events generated in the receiver, with the attenuated state improving detection and discrimination of weak inputs against internal noise.1
The internal-attention-state programme remained, in Honorton’s own framing, an open empirical question whose resolution depended on whether independent investigators using the jointly agreed standards could reproduce the state-dependent effects. The clearest settling study would be a preregistered, multi-laboratory autoganzfeld series with induction-fidelity measures and a fixed stopping rule, run by investigators outside the original PRL group, the Edinburgh replication effort he was establishing at his death was a first move in that direction.27
Skeptical Critiques and Discussion
Critique 1: The early ganzfeld database departed from ideal standards on randomization, sensory leakage, and multiple testing
Hyman’s critical appraisal of the ganzfeld corpus argued that the experiments as a group fell short on target randomization, control of sensory cues, and statistical multiplicity, and that flaws covaried with study outcomes.28
Honorton’s meta-analytic response disputed the flaw–outcome correlation and the multiple-analysis adjustments, and the two ultimately co-signed a joint communiqué agreeing that an overall effect existed in the database that could not reasonably be explained by selective reporting or multiple analysis, while continuing to differ on whether that effect constituted evidence for psi.2930
Response by Honorton: The autoganzfeld was designed specifically to meet the jointly agreed standards, placing target selection, presentation, blind judging, and data recording under computer control with sender and receiver in separate RF-shielded, sound-attenuated rooms, to remove the leakage and randomization concerns the appraisal had raised.31
Analysis. Hyman and Honorton’s exchange moved from dispute over flaw–outcome correlations in the manual-ganzfeld studies to a joint statement conceding a non-artifactual overall effect while leaving its interpretation contested. The automated system addressed the named sensory-leakage and randomization concerns by physically isolating sender and receiver and computer-controlling target handling; it did not by itself resolve disagreement over whether the residual effect reflects psi or an as-yet-unidentified conventional process.
Critique 2: Positive internal-state results could reflect selective reporting (the file-drawer problem)
A standing skeptical objection to small-effect internal-state meta-analyses is that unpublished null studies inflate the apparent effect, a concern the joint communiqué names directly as a candidate explanation for the ganzfeld database.32
In the forced-choice precognition meta-analysis Honorton and Ferrari estimated that roughly 46 unreported null studies per published study would be required to reduce the result to nonsignificance, and found no systematic relationship between outcome and eight quality indices.3 For the autoganzfeld he reported every session completed since the system’s 1983 inauguration, including pilot and ongoing studies, stating that this database therefore had no file-drawer.33
Analysis. Honorton’s two responses operate at different levels: the precognition meta-analysis offers a tolerance estimate against an external file-drawer, while the autoganzfeld claim asserts complete internal reporting of a single laboratory’s output. The tolerance figure addresses but does not eliminate selective-reporting concerns for an aggregate literature, and the no-file-drawer claim for the autoganzfeld depends on the completeness of one laboratory’s record-keeping, which independent investigators outside the PRL group would need to corroborate.
