To address this limitation, Roe conducted a series of three subsequent experiments using a counterbalanced repeated-measures design in which participants completed remote viewing tasks both in ganzfeld and in ordinary waking conditions.1 This within-subjects approach allowed direct comparison of the same individuals’ performance under the two consciousness conditions. The experiments involved 110 participants across the series, with targets consisting of randomly selected remote locations that participants attempted to describe while either in ganzfeld or in a normal waking state.
The results provided evidence supporting the ganzfeld enhancement hypothesis. In the ganzfeld condition, participants achieved 43 hits out of 110 trials (39%), representing a highly significant positive deviation from chance expectation. In contrast, the waking remote viewing condition yielded 30 hits (27.5%), which was only marginally better than chance. The difference in z-scores for target ratings between the two conditions approached statistical significance, suggesting that ganzfeld stimulation may genuinely facilitate remote viewing performance.1
Phenomenology and consciousness factors
Beyond comparing hit rates, Roe investigated the phenomenological properties of consciousness during ganzfeld remote viewing. In the first experiment, participants completed Pekala’s Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI), a multidimensional measure assessing subjective experience across 12 sub-dimensions including absorption, arousal, internal dialog, and time sense.

This pattern aligns with theoretical accounts proposing that psi expression requires a shift away from analytical, verbally-mediated cognition toward more intuitive, imagistic processing.
However, the replicability of these phenomenological associations proved inconsistent. In experiments 2 and 3, individual differences measures were replaced by assessments of transliminality, openness to experience, and dissociative experiences. These personality-based predictors showed no significant relationship to task success. Additionally, the PCI dimensions that predicted performance in experiment 1 did not replicate in experiments 2 and 3, with only the time sense dimension showing a significant association in experiment 2.1 When data were combined across all three experiments, no PCI dimensions correlated with task performance, suggesting that phenomenological factors may be less stable predictors than initially indicated.
Individual differences and psi performance
A persistent challenge in parapsychological research is identifying stable individual difference measures that predict psi performance. Roe’s ganzfeld remote viewing studies systematically tested several candidate predictors, including personality traits, cognitive styles, and dissociative tendencies.
