Matlock’s research confirms Stevenson’s long-standing observation that past-life memories typically emerge in early childhood and decline sharply by age eight. However, his longitudinal follow-up work reveals important nuances in this pattern. When Matlock and colleagues re-interviewed Rabih Elawar (a Lebanese Druze man studied by Stevenson in childhood) at ages 58–60, they found that Elawar retained remarkably detailed memories of the previous life Stevenson had documented more than fifty years earlier.1

Elawar’s case is exceptional. He remembered all major incidents recorded by Stevenson, sometimes adding new details, and when presented with Stevenson’s unpublished field notes, he was able to clarify apparent discrepancies and recall additional information he had not mentioned spontaneously.1 Matlock attributes this superior retention to contextual factors: Elawar recalled having lived in the same village, within the same extended family, and the previous life ended only six months before his birth, circumstances that would have furnished abundant environmental cues to reinforce and sustain memory throughout childhood and into adulthood.

This finding suggests that the apparent “fading” of past-life memories in childhood may not reflect genuine forgetting but rather a shift in accessibility. When environmental cues are sparse or when the child moves away from the location of the previous life, memories may become less accessible to conscious recall even if they remain encoded in memory systems.

Adult persistence and transformation

Matlock’s research documents a striking developmental shift in how past-life memories manifest. Whereas children’s past-life memories typically present in the waking state with episodic clarity, adult past-life memories tend to be fragmentary and appear primarily in dreams and other altered states of consciousness.2 This developmental difference suggests that maturation of the brain and cognitive systems alters the accessibility and phenomenology of past-life memory retrieval.

In one case study, Matlock examined a French woman in her early 50s who began experiencing visions and intuitive impressions about seven past lives following several traumatic events.2 She was able to verify memories of the most recent life and identify the deceased individual, an American Marine fatally wounded in Vietnam. Notably, investigation revealed that she had been subliminally influenced by this life throughout her childhood and increasingly after a near-death experience at age eighteen, even though conscious recall did not emerge until her 50s.

This case illustrates a critical distinction Matlock makes: past-life experiences may exert behavioral, emotional, and somatic influences on the present life long before (or even in the absence of) conscious declarative memory. The woman’s unconscious processing of the presumed past life shaped her choices, emotional responses, and even physical symptoms for decades before the memories surfaced consciously.2

Adults claiming to recall multiple past lives do so more frequently than children, though fewer of these adult cases result in “solved” identifications of the deceased person.2 The fragmentary nature of adult memories and their tendency to appear in dreams rather than waking consciousness make verification more difficult, yet Matlock’s work demonstrates that even incomplete adult memories can sometimes be corroborated when sufficient detail is recorded before verification is attempted.

Near-death experiences as memory catalysts

One of Matlock’s most significant recent findings concerns the relationship between near-death experiences (NDEs) and the emergence or intensification of past-life memories. In a pilot study of ten cases, he found that in all instances, past-life memories or visions either first surfaced or became substantially stronger following an NDE.3

Matlock hypothesizes that NDEs confer a lasting transliminality (an openness to subconscious processing) that facilitates access to past-life memories recorded in the subconscious mind. The effect is particularly pronounced when NDEs involve transcendent consciousness: respondents whose NDEs scored five or above on the NDE Scale’s Transcendental subscale showed the strongest before-versus-after effects on past-life memory strength.3

Moreover, after NDEs, past-life memories were more likely to appear in the waking state rather than exclusively in dreams, and they tended to be clearer, more extensive, and more frequently veridical than memories reported before the NDE.3 This shift from dream-based to waking recall in adults following NDEs parallels the waking-state presentation typical of children’s past-life memories, suggesting that NDEs may temporarily restore or enhance the cognitive accessibility mechanisms that normally mature away during development.

Dreams and altered states

Matlock’s examination of past-life memories in dreams reveals that, like present-life memories, apparent past-life memories can be incorporated into dream content, though they appear in only a small fraction of dream reports. His analysis of Angela Grubbs’ dreams about a deceased nurse named Francine Donovan demonstrates that past-life dreams can occasionally furnish sufficient detail to permit identification of the previous person.5

Grubbs’ dreams were exceptional in their extensiveness and consistency with documented facts about Donovan’s life. Critically, Grubbs recorded her dreams in emails before verification of details was attempted, establishing a clear temporal record that rules out retrospective confabulation or incorporation of information learned after the dreams occurred.5 The dreams were largely episodic rather than fragmentary autobiographical memories and contained no demonstrable distortions when checked against historical records.

Matlock proposes that the function of past-life memories in dreams may extend beyond simple memory consolidation. Instead, dreams may serve a role in subliminal emotional processing of past experience (including past-life experience) that remains unresolved or emotionally relevant to the present life.5

Recurring nightmares with past-life content present a particularly striking phenomenon. Matlock documented the case of a man whose recurring nightmare about the 1934 Los Angeles New Year’s Flood began at age four and persisted into his 50s.4 The dream recurred several times monthly, causing the dreamer to wake in distress and cold sweat, characteristics of posttraumatic nightmares. Investigation confirmed that the dream reflected an accurate memory of an event (a death) that occurred 36 years before the dreamer’s birth. The specificity and verifiability of the dream content, combined with its traumatic character and long persistence, suggest that past-life trauma can manifest in the present life through recurring nightmare patterns.

Memory foundations and cognitive mechanisms

A central theme in Matlock’s work is the striking similarity between past-life and present-life memory characteristics. Past-life memories demonstrate many of the same properties as ordinary autobiographical memories: they can be vivid flashbulb memories, they may be triggered by association with things seen or heard, and they often show recency effects (concentration on the final days, months, or years of the previous life) or reminiscence bumps (heightened memory for the prime years of the previous life).4

Matlock’s follow-up study of Rabih Elawar at age 58–60 provides direct evidence for this parallel. Elawar’s recall of the previous life at that advanced age was superior to what has been reported for past-life memory retention among other Lebanese Druze adults or among Sri Lankan, Indian, Brazilian, and American adults studied in the literature.1 Matlock argues that his findings are consistent with what is known about present-life memory retention and loss, supporting the view that the foundations of past-life memory are closely similar to those of present-life memory.

One notable difference is that autobiographical knowledge, the contextual framework that allows us to place fragmentary memories in temporal and narrative sequence, is regularly missing from past-life recollections.4 Children typically cannot locate their past-life memories within a coherent life narrative, and adults often recall only fragments without the autobiographical scaffolding that would permit full episodic reconstruction. This absence may explain why past-life memories are often experienced as intrusive, isolated episodes rather than as integrated components of a remembered life story.

The cognitive mechanisms underlying past-life memory retrieval appear to involve both explicit (declarative) and implicit (non-declarative) memory systems. Matlock’s case studies demonstrate that past-life experiences can influence present-life behavior, emotion, and somatic responses through implicit memory pathways even when explicit recall is absent or minimal.2 This dissociation between implicit and explicit memory for past-life content parallels dissociations observed in present-life trauma and memory research.
