Overview

Schlitz’s research on consciousness transformation occupies a distinctive niche: it takes seriously the first-person reports of people who describe profound shifts in their sense of self, their relationship to others, and their understanding of reality, and attempts to subject those reports to systematic empirical scrutiny. A Type-II vulnerability runs through this literature: transformative experiences are state-dependent, often rare, and highly variable across individuals and cultural contexts, meaning that studies with modest sample sizes may fail to detect real effects not because the effects are absent but because the conditions that produce them are difficult to standardize or replicate on demand. Schlitz’s methodological response has been to combine qualitative depth (structured interviews with adepts and masters) with quantitative breadth (longitudinal surveys, repeated-measures cohort designs) rather than relying on either approach alone.3

The Living Deeply Research Program, Scope and Design

The Living Deeply program at the Institute of Noetic Sciences collected hundreds of self-reports of transformative experience, conducted focus groups with practitioners from diverse traditions, and carried out in-depth structured interviews with teachers and scholars. The ITP findings converge with the masters interview data in identifying self-transcendence, a construct that overlaps with the “I to We” shift described in the qualitative work, as a mechanism through which transformative practice produces well-being benefits. The Grateful Aging Program extended this framework to older adults, modeling transformation and healing in the second half of life as a naturalistic process with identifiable predictors and outcomes.5

Death Makes Life Possible, Structure and Scope

Death Makes Life Possible is organized around eleven thematic chapters covering worldview transformation, fear of death, near-death and after-death experiences, cross-cultural cosmologies, the science of the afterlife, contemplative practices for dying, grief as transformation, dreaming and death, transformative art, quantum consciousness frameworks, and healing at individual and societal levels. The book draws on Schlitz’s interview-based research with practitioners and scholars, her IONS transformation research program, and the broader empirical literature on near-death experiences and consciousness. The foreword is by Deepak Chopra, who co-produced the companion documentary. The book is a synthesis work rather than a primary empirical report; its claims about the continuation of consciousness are framed as the researcher’s preferred interpretation and as contested within mainstream science.

The grief-and-transformation thread in this work extends into more recent experimental research. A 2025 study examined grief and absorption in a psychomanteum setting, combining ancient wisdom frameworks with contemporary technology to probe how grief might serve as a doorway to transformative experience, continuing the program’s interest in liminal states as catalysts for worldview change.6

Grief, Absorption, and the Psychomanteum Study (2025)

The 2025 psychomanteum study (Schlitz et al., published in the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion) examined grief and absorption using a psychomanteum protocol, a mirror-gazing procedure associated with reported contact experiences with deceased individuals, combined with technology-assisted measurement. Cancer Survival, Grief, and Normalizing Adversity

“Unremarkable” Recoveries, Sample, Method, and Cultural Framing

The study (Killoran, Schlitz, and Lewis, 2002, Qualitative Health Research) interviewed 17 long-term survivors of metastatic cancer about the impact of their life-threatening condition on their life stories. The sample was drawn from Northern California Cancer Center records. Contrary to the existing popular literature suggesting that survival from life-threatening disease encourages self-transformation, nearly all participants framed their recoveries as largely unremarkable. The analysis identified traditional North American cultural values, particularly the normalization of adversity and beliefs in personal agency over health, as bolstering this framing. The study is qualitative and exploratory; no statistical tests are reported. The primary artifact concern is interviewer expectancy: if interviewers expected transformation narratives, the finding of unremarkable framing is less likely to be an artifact of demand characteristics than the reverse. The study is notable within Schlitz’s program for its disconfirmatory character relative to the transformation literature’s dominant narrative.4

The replication and precognition work Schlitz contributed to with Bem and colleagues represents a methodologically distinct strand of her research, one that intersects with the transformation program through the role of expectancy and belief in modulating anomalous cognition. Two preregistered replication studies of a time-reversed priming task found that the confirmatory hypotheses were not supported, though exploratory analyses identified expectancy-related moderators.77 The relevance to the transformation program is that belief and expectancy, central variables in worldview research, appear to modulate performance in psi tasks, suggesting that the psychological states studied in transformation research may have functional consequences for anomalous cognition.

Bem Replication Studies, Preregistered Hypotheses and Exploratory Moderators

Two experiments (Schlitz, Bem, Cardeña et al., 2021, Journal of Scientific Exploration) involving an international collaboration of experimenters sought to replicate Bem’s time-reversed priming paradigm. The preregistered confirmatory hypothesis, that response times to incongruent stimuli would be longer than to congruent stimuli even though the prime had not yet appeared, was not supported in either experiment. Experiment 1 exploratory analyses found a significant effect in the English-language subsample but not in non-English translations. Experiment 2 tested whether a pro-psi versus anti-psi statement at the start of the experiment would modulate performance; the primary psi hypothesis was not supported, but participants who received the pro-psi statement showed a greater psi score than those who received the anti-psi statement, mixed support for an expectancy moderator. Sensation Seeking (a component of extraversion) was discussed as a personality correlate of psi performance. The study addresses multiple-comparisons concerns by distinguishing preregistered confirmatory hypotheses from exploratory analyses, and addresses optional stopping by using a fixed-N design. The null result on the confirmatory hypothesis is the primary finding; exploratory moderator effects require independent replication before conclusions can be drawn.77

Modern Context

Mainstream psychology now frames the compassion and interconnectedness outcomes Schlitz documents as instances of self-transcendent experience, transient states marked by decreased self-salience and increased felt connectedness.[8] Complementing that, the S-ART neurobiological model identifies self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-transcendence as the mechanistic axes through which contemplative practice produces durable trait-level change, offering a neuroscience scaffold for interpreting the well-being shifts observed in Schlitz’s ITP cohort.[9]

Skeptical Critiques and Discussion

Critique 1: The transformation research program relies on self-selected, purposive samples of practitioners and adepts, making it impossible to generalize findings to the broader population or to rule out self-selection as the primary driver of observed outcomes.

Skeptic source: This methodological concern applies directly to the masters interview study (N=47, purposively sampled spiritual teachers and scholars) and the ITP cohort study (N=53, self-selected participants in a community practice program). Both studies acknowledge the absence of randomization and control groups.12

Response: Schlitz and colleagues acknowledge the sampling limitation explicitly in the ITP study, describing it as a prospective within-subjects uncontrolled cohort study. The research program’s response is methodological pluralism: qualitative depth with purposive samples is used to generate hypotheses and identify mechanisms, while quantitative longitudinal designs are used to test whether those mechanisms predict outcomes. The ITP study’s finding that self-transcendence mediated the relationship between program involvement and well-being outcomes is consistent with the mechanism proposed in the qualitative work, providing convergent evidence across methods even in the absence of a randomized control group.23

Analysis. The sampling critique is well-founded and partially unresolved; the convergent-methods response is reasonable but does not eliminate self-selection as an alternative explanation for the ITP outcomes. A randomized controlled trial of ITP or a comparable program would be required to resolve the question.

Critique 2: The cancer survivor study’s finding that recoveries were framed as “unremarkable” challenges the transformation program’s core assumption that confrontation with mortality reliably produces worldview transformation, suggesting the program may be studying a culturally specific minority experience rather than a universal human response.

Response: Schlitz’s own research produced this disconfirmatory finding, which is methodologically significant: it demonstrates that the transformation research program does not simply confirm transformation narratives. The finding is consistent with the program’s broader model, which identifies cultural context as a moderator of transformation outcomes, meaning that North American normalization of adversity is itself a culturally specific worldview that shapes how individuals interpret and narrate life-threatening experiences. The Death Makes Life Possible framework explicitly addresses cross-cultural variation in death cosmologies and their relationship to transformation, positioning the cancer survivor finding as evidence for the importance of cultural moderators rather than as a refutation of the transformation model.3

Analysis. The disconfirmatory finding is genuine and important; the rebuttal that cultural context is a moderator (rather than transformation being universal) is theoretically coherent and supported by the cross-cultural scope of the Death Makes Life Possible synthesis. The question of what proportion of individuals undergo genuine worldview transformation following life-threatening illness remains empirically open.
