Research
Morphic resonance and formative causation
Sheldrake’s morphic resonance hypothesis proposes that patterns of organization and behavior become embedded within morphic fields, organizing fields that exist within and around self-organizing systems. According to this theory, each member of a system or species draws upon and contributes to the collective memory within these fields, making patterns increasingly probable as they are repeated across time and populations. Recent empirical work has tested this hypothesis in the domain of learning. A study using the online game Wordle found mixed results: while Study 1 did not confirm the predicted negative correlation between attempts and time of day, Study 2 revealed a significant increase in the percentage of players solving the puzzle from morning to evening on the first two guesses, suggesting that if morphic resonance operates in learning, it may be a subtle effect easily inhibited by conscious cognitive processes.7
Telephone and email telepathy
Sheldrake’s most extensively documented experimental work concerns telecommunication telepathy, the apparent ability of people to anticipate who is calling, emailing, or messaging them before receiving the communication. A comprehensive meta-analysis of 26 telecommunication telepathy experiments published between 2003 and 2024 found overall hit rates very significantly above chance level (p = 1×10⁻⁷).1 The basic experimental design involves four potential callers in remote locations; one is selected at random and asked to call the participant, who must name the caller before answering. By random guessing, the hit rate would be around 25%.
The meta-analysis revealed several important patterns. Selected participants (those identified as having stronger apparent telepathic abilities) achieved significantly higher hit rates than unselected participants. Hit rates were also significantly higher when callers and participants shared an emotional bond. Notably, the effect sizes in telecommunication telepathy were higher than those reported in ganzfeld and dream telepathy experiments.1 However, when tests were carried out under precognitive conditions (where the participant was asked to predict a future call rather than respond to a present one), hit rates fell to chance levels, suggesting that the phenomenon depends on simultaneous or near-simultaneous mental contact rather than precognition.
Sheldrake and Stedall developed a series of automated telephone telepathy tests to improve accessibility and reduce experimenter effects. In one protocol, three participants who knew each other were linked in a conference call format; in each trial, one was randomly selected as the receiver, another as the caller (who was muted and asked to think about the receiver), and the third was muted and unaware of the trial. The receiver attempted to identify the caller before being connected. Surprisingly, none of the “conference call” tests showed hit rates significantly different from the 50% chance level. However, in a second type of test in which trials were spaced over longer time periods and callers and receivers went about their normal lives between trials, a total of 266 trials yielded a hit rate of 57% (p = .01).3 This finding suggests that continuous engagement with the experimental apparatus may confound telepathic effects, and that more naturalistic conditions may be more conducive to the phenomenon.
Email telepathy has been investigated using similar protocols. In an automated email telepathy test, subjects registered online with the names and email addresses of three senders. A computer selected a sender at random and asked them to send an email to the subject, who then guessed the sender’s name before the message was delivered. In 419 trials, there were 175 hits (41.8%), significantly above the 33.3% chance level (p = .0001).4 Notably, hit rates in incomplete tests were higher than in complete tests, and the highest hit rates were observed in the 20–29-year age group. The effect size in these tests was lower than in previous telephone and email telepathy tests, possibly because subjects were guessing who had sent a message several minutes earlier rather than thinking about them simultaneously.
The sense of being stared at (scopaesthesia)
Sheldrake’s research on the sense of being stared at, or scopaesthesia, represents one of the most extensively investigated areas of anomalous cognition. Surveys have consistently shown that most adults and children report having experienced the ability to detect when someone is looking at them from behind. A review of experimental evidence based on a collection of 960 case histories gathered over 25 years found that in 466 cases (49%), directional effects were explicit, the person or animal being stared at responded by turning and looking directly back at the looker rather than searching at random for the source of attention. In 186 cases (19%), directional effects were implicit. In online surveys, including a survey of skeptics, the great majority of respondents reported having experienced directional scopaesthesia.2
The directionality of scopaesthesia has significant theoretical implications. If scopaesthesia depends only on the detection of another’s attention without directional information, it would be a scalar phenomenon analogous to telephone telepathy, telling us little about the nature of vision. However, if it is normally directional (enabling those stared at to detect the direction from which the look is coming) it would be a vector phenomenon with both magnitude and direction, providing evidence for visual extramission (the outward movement of attention or visual force from the eyes). Sheldrake argues that the preponderance of directional cases in natural-history data supports the extramission interpretation and suggests that minds are extended beyond brains.2
A related phenomenon is the apparent ability to wake sleeping people or animals by staring at them. Sheldrake and Smart examined more than 240 accounts submitted over a 30-year period by informants in the UK, US, Germany, and other countries. Most reports (145 cases) concerned waking sleeping dogs and cats by staring at them. When animals were woken by people’s stares, 26% were said to have responded directionally by looking straight at the person watching them. Some people reported that they themselves responded directionally to the stares of animals or other people as they woke, but the proportion of directional human responses was significantly lower (11%) than animal responses.8 Sheldrake and Smart propose the term “scopegersis” (from Greek roots meaning “look at” and “awakening”) for this putative ability, which may involve the superior colliculus, a mid-brain region concerned with orientation towards environmental stimuli.
Animal cognition and end-of-life experiences
Sheldrake has conducted extensive research on anomalous cognition in non-human animals, particularly in the context of human-animal bonds and end-of-life phenomena. A study examining reports of end-of-life experiences (ELEs) in dying animals found that pet behavior before death often resembles people’s end-of-life experiences. Reports were grouped into specific categories: last goodbyes, last visits, last rally, retreating into solitude, unusual premonitions of death, somatic surprises, terminal lucidity in animals, and potential near-death visions in animals. The study presented 43 case reports, many showing striking similarities to remarkable behavior reported by dying people, suggesting common physiological underpinnings to these experiences.5
Sheldrake and colleagues have also investigated after-death communications (ADCs) from non-human animals. A database comprising 442 accounts of animal ADCs was collected from multiple sources including direct appeals, Facebook groups, scholarly literature, and newspaper reader responses. The study found a close resemblance between ADCs from animals and from humans in the types of experience, dream visitations, a sense of presence, visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory apparitions, and psychokinetic effects. As with human ADCs, the great majority of animal ADCs were reported to have occurred in the first hours or days after death, with a dramatic falling off over time. The data suggest that people grieve their pets in much the same fashion as they grieve their human loved ones.6

Sheldrake’s work has had substantial influence on contemporary parapsychology and anomalous cognition research, particularly in establishing telephone telepathy as a replicable experimental paradigm.
