In a landmark pilot study, Schwartz and colleagues examined sterile water samples in sealed vials after exposure to the hands of therapeutic practitioners trained in Laying-on-of-Hands or Therapeutic Touch techniques.1 The study included 14 practitioners and 14 recipients, with 84 treated spectra compared against 57 control spectra. The first hypothesis, that treated spectra would show variation in the 2.5–3.0 micrometer range compared with controls, was confirmed at p = 0.02. When analyzed using only the zinc selenide internal reflection element (to control for instrumental variation), the effect strengthened to p = 0.005, and the most robust comparison (treated versus calibration controls) yielded p = 0.0004.
Importantly, the study addressed methodological criticisms from earlier work. Water samples were sterile, vials were randomly selected and sealed, and environmental factors (temperature, barometric pressure, sampling order) were monitored and did not account for the observed effects. Schwartz extended this work to examine both objective and subjective effects simultaneously. In a series of 12 wine-tasting experiments, groups of seven people tasted wine from a single 750 ml bottle that had been decanted into two identical 375 ml carafes.2 The carafes had identical histories except that one had been the focus of intentioned awareness by meditators before tasting, while the other served as a control. In 11 of 12 sessions, a majority of tasters preferred the treated wine; one session resulted in a tie. Using an exact binomial test, the p-value is 0.00049, allowing the conclusion with 95% confidence that the probability of a majority preferring the treated wine is at least 0.76.
