Morphic Resonance

Morphic resonance is Rupert Sheldrake’s hypothesis that nature has a kind of collective memory. Each time a pattern appears in the world, whether a crystal growing, an animal learning a trick, or a person solving a puzzle, it becomes slightly easier for that same pattern to appear again elsewhere. No physical connection between the two instances is needed. The idea sits far outside mainstream biology and chemistry. It attracted one of the most famous editorial attacks in modern science. Yet it has inspired a small but persistent line of experiments that researchers still debate.

Key findings

  • Sheldrake proposed that organisms and systems inherit habits from earlier similar systems through non-physical “morphic fields.” He called this process formative causation.4
  • Early television experiments tested whether viewers could more easily spot a hidden image after it was broadcast to millions. Results were mixed. One study did find a significant rise in recognition for the broadcast image.28
  • A three-study investigation using the word-puzzle game Wordle found partial support in one study but no support in the other two. Any detected effects were extremely small.2
  • The hypothesis was publicly condemned in a 1981 Nature editorial as a candidate for burning. It remains one of the sharpest mainstream rejections of a scientific book in recent memory.51
  • Critics argue that all proposed evidence fits mundane explanations such as improved technique, selection bias, or statistical noise.28
  • Sheldrake’s morphogenesis hypothesis has been noted as theoretically complementary to reincarnation research, though it faces the same barriers to mainstream acceptance.59

Overview

Start with a simple question: why does a developing embryo reliably grow into the right shape? Mainstream biology answers with genes and chemical signals. Sheldrake argued in his 1981 book that genes alone cannot fully explain form. He proposed that every type of system, whether a molecule, a plant, or a learned behavior, is shaped by an invisible organizing field. He called these morphic fields. The more often a pattern has occurred in the past, the stronger the field becomes. A stronger field guides future instances of that pattern toward the same form.4

Deeper dive: the core hypothesis of formative causation

Sheldrake’s hypothesis of formative causation holds that morphic fields carry a kind of memory across time and space. No known physical signal is involved. The fields are not electromagnetic or gravitational in the normal sense. They are proposed to act through morphic resonance: a new system resonates with past systems of the same type, and that resonance shapes its development. Sheldrake described this in A New Science of Life (1981) and expanded it in The Presence of the Past (1988).4 The hypothesis predicts that any skill, crystal structure, or behavior should become progressively easier to reproduce worldwide as more instances accumulate, even when there is no normal information transfer between those instances.2

The hypothesis connects to older ideas in biology. Early twentieth-century embryologists developed the concept of morphogenetic fields to explain how embryos take shape. Sheldrake extended those ideas in a radical direction. He proposed that fields persist through time and can influence systems that have never been in physical contact with their predecessors.75 That extension is what separates his proposal from mainstream biology and makes it controversial.

Deeper dive: morphic resonance and the collective unconscious

Sheldrake drew explicit parallels between morphic resonance and Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious. In a series of essays published in Psychological Perspectives in 1987, he argued that the collective unconscious could be understood as a morphic field of human experience. Archetypes, in this view, are patterns reinforced by countless repetitions across human history.53 This framing attracted interest from transpersonal psychologists. It also deepened mainstream scientists’ skepticism, since it moved the hypothesis further from testable biology and closer to speculative psychology.

How Researchers Have Tested It

Morphic resonance makes a specific, testable prediction. A skill or pattern should become easier to acquire or recognize after many others have already acquired or produced it. This should happen even when there is no normal way for that information to travel. Researchers have tried to test this in two main ways: by showing hidden images to large audiences, and by studying word puzzles played by millions of people online.282

Deeper dive: the television hidden-image experiments

In the early 1980s, Sheldrake worked with television broadcasters to run large-scale tests. The design was straightforward. A hidden image (a figure concealed within a visual pattern) was shown to a control group before broadcast. This set a baseline recognition rate. Then the image was broadcast to millions of viewers. Afterward, a new group was tested to see whether recognition had improved.

In the first experiment, broadcast on the UK program A Plus on August 31, 1983, roughly 1,900 subjects took part. Recognition of the broadcast image rose from about 3.9 percent before broadcast to about 6.8 percent after. A second experiment, broadcast on Tomorrow’s World in Europe on November 15, 1984, showed a 32 percent increase in recognition of the broadcast image. Results varied by location and were weaker in the southern hemisphere and the United States.28 Critics, including Susan Blackmore, noted that the design had flaws. The pre- and post-broadcast groups were not matched. The theory was also arguably circular, drawing on itself to interpret results.28

The Wordle studies are the most recent and careful attempt to test morphic resonance. Wordle is a word-guessing game played daily by millions of people worldwide. Everyone attempts the same puzzle on the same day. Players in different time zones play at different hours. This creates a natural experiment. If morphic resonance operates, players who attempt the puzzle later in the day should benefit from the accumulated resonance of millions of earlier players. They should solve it more easily.2

Deeper dive: the three Wordle studies in detail

Black, Butzer, and Sheldrake (2026) ran three separate studies.2

Study 1 collected self-reported Wordle scores from 332 participants playing the official New York Times Wordle and 251 playing a custom control version. The researchers used a statistical tool called Spearman’s Rho to test whether time of day correlated with the number of attempts needed. The correlation was not statistically significant (rs = -0.03, p = 0.59, meaning: if there were no real effect, results like this would appear about 59 times in 100 tries by chance alone). Study 1 provided no support for morphic resonance.

Study 2 used WordleBot data from a large random sample of players across 12 days. It compared morning versus evening success rates using two-sample z-tests. It found a statistically significant increase in the share of players solving the puzzle on the first two attempts from morning to evening (Attempt 1: z = 8.38, p less than 0.001; Attempt 2: z = 7.01, p less than 0.001). Those p-values mean: results this strong would occur by chance less than 1 time in 1,000 if there were no real effect. However, the effect sizes were extremely small (Cohen’s h = 0.012 and 0.01 respectively). Cohen’s h measures the difference between two proportions. A value near zero means the proportions are nearly identical in practical terms. The morning-to-evening difference was real in a statistical sense but invisible in any real-world context.

Study 3 extended the analysis to 30 days and did not replicate Study 2’s findings. Instead, it showed significant decreases in success rates from morning to evening across five of six attempts, directly contradicting the morphic resonance prediction. The authors also noted that the share of players guessing correctly on the first attempt (0.3 to 0.7 percent) far exceeded the 0.04 percent expected by chance, raising questions about cheating or other factors unrelated to morphic resonance.

What the Experiments Found

Taken together, the experimental record is inconsistent. The television experiments produced some positive results, but their designs had weaknesses that make the findings hard to interpret. The Wordle studies used much larger datasets and more careful methods. They found no reliable pattern. Where a statistically significant result appeared in Study 2, it was not reproduced in Study 3. The effect was also so small as to be practically meaningless.2

It helps to understand why effect size matters. When researchers say a result is statistically significant, they mean it is unlikely to have occurred by chance alone. The conventional threshold is a probability below 5 percent, written as p less than 0.05. But a result can be statistically significant and still be trivially small. The Wordle Study 2 finding clears the significance threshold easily. The actual difference between morning and evening players is so tiny, though, that it would be invisible in any real-world context. The authors themselves concluded that if morphic resonance is real, it is likely a subtle effect easily masked by other factors.2

Deeper dive: replication failure and what it means

Replication means repeating a study to see whether the same result appears again. A single positive result means little on its own. Science gains confidence when independent researchers, using different samples and sometimes different methods, consistently find the same effect. The Wordle studies show the problem clearly. Study 2 found a small but statistically significant morning-to-evening improvement. Study 3, using a larger 30-day dataset, found the opposite pattern. This kind of inconsistency is called a replication failure. It does not prove the effect is absent. It does mean the evidence cannot yet support a firm conclusion. The authors acknowledged this directly, noting that more refined experimental designs would be needed to detect morphic resonance if it exists as a subtle effect.2

“Study 2 found a statistically significant increase in Wordle success from morning to evening, but Study 3, using a 30-day dataset, showed the opposite pattern across five of six attempts, leaving the morphic resonance prediction without consistent empirical support.”2

Skeptical Critiques and Discussion

Critique 1: The hypothesis is incoherent and untestable, making experimentation pointless

Susan Blackmore raised this critique in her analysis of the television experiments.28

Blackmore argued that Sheldrake’s theory is circular: it draws on itself to interpret results, and any outcome can be accommodated after the fact. She wrote that theories are powerful only when they are both coherent and testable. Without those properties, even a positive experimental result proves nothing. Sheldrake’s supporters counter that the Wordle studies represent a genuine attempt to specify in advance what morphic resonance predicts and to test that prediction with large, publicly available data.2 The debate about whether the hypothesis is truly falsifiable remains unresolved.

Evidence strength: strong (the circularity concern is well-grounded and has not been fully answered)

Critique 2: The proposed evidence fits mundane explanations

This is the standard mainstream critique, reflected in coverage of the television experiments and in the broader reception of Sheldrake’s work.28

For the television experiments, critics pointed out that improved recognition after broadcast could reflect better methods in the post-broadcast testing group, selection bias in who volunteered, or regression to the mean. Regression to the mean is a statistical pattern: if a measurement is unusually low on one occasion, it tends to be higher on the next simply because extreme values are rare, not because anything changed. For the Wordle studies, the authors themselves acknowledged that cheating, internet discussion of the puzzle, and other confounds could explain any morning-to-evening differences.2 A confound is any factor other than the one being tested that could produce the observed result. When confounds are present, a positive result cannot be credited to the hypothesis under investigation.

Evidence strength: strong (mundane explanations have not been ruled out in any published test)

Critique 3: The hypothesis has no plausible physical mechanism and contradicts established science

This was the basis of the famous 1981 Nature editorial by editor John Maddox, who called Sheldrake’s book a candidate for burning.51

Maddox’s objection was that Sheldrake proposed a causal influence operating across space and time with no known physical carrier. Mainstream physics and biology have no mechanism by which a crystal grown in one laboratory could influence the ease of growing the same crystal in another laboratory on the other side of the world. Sheldrake’s response has always been that the absence of a known mechanism is not the same as impossibility. He argues that science has sometimes discovered new mechanisms after anomalous effects were first documented. Critics reply that this argument could justify almost any claim. The burden of proof lies with the claimant to propose a testable mechanism, not merely to assert that one might exist.28 A sociological analysis of Sheldrake’s reception notes that the Nature editorial effectively ended his academic career while public interest in his work remained high. This illustrates how institutional pressure can exclude unconventional researchers regardless of the empirical merits of their claims.51

Evidence strength: strong (no mechanism has been proposed that is compatible with established physics)

Critique 4: The memory trace critique applies equally to morphic resonance

Philosopher Stephen Braude noted that Sheldrake’s account of morphic resonance inherits conceptual problems from memory trace theory.29

Braude argued that any theory proposing that past patterns are stored and later retrieved faces a fundamental logical problem. Something must identify which stored pattern is relevant to the current situation. That identification process itself requires a kind of memory, creating an infinite regress. Morphic fields face this problem just as brain-based memory theories do. Braude’s critique is philosophical rather than empirical, but it raises a genuine question about whether the hypothesis is even coherent as an explanatory framework.29

Evidence strength: moderate (the philosophical objection is serious but Sheldrake has not directly engaged with it in the published record available here)

Where Things Stand Today

Morphic resonance remains firmly outside mainstream science. No peer-reviewed study in biology, chemistry, or physics has confirmed any of its core predictions under conditions that rule out mundane explanations. The hypothesis has attracted sustained interest in transpersonal psychology, consciousness studies, and parapsychology. Researchers in those fields have used it as a framework for thinking about collective memory, species-level healing, and the persistence of patterns after death.838 These applications extend the hypothesis well beyond what any experiment has tested.

Deeper dive: morphic resonance in adjacent fields

Several researchers in consciousness studies and parapsychology have drawn on morphic resonance as a theoretical resource. Christopher Bache used Sheldrake’s morphic field concept to argue that intense perinatal experiences in psychedelic therapy involve contact with collective human suffering at the species level, not just individual psychology.8 Ben Goertzel’s euryphysics framework proposed that morphic resonance dynamics could explain why patterns, once established, become more likely to recur across the eurycosm, a proposed domain beyond ordinary spacetime.48 A book review in the Journal of Scientific Exploration suggested morphic resonance as a possible framework for understanding survival-after-death phenomena.38 None of these applications constitute empirical tests of the hypothesis. They are theoretical extensions that assume morphic resonance is real and ask what else it might explain.

The sociological position of morphic resonance is itself instructive. A study of center-periphery dynamics in science found that Sheldrake’s work shows how unconventional researchers can be pushed out of academic institutions by elite journals while maintaining a large public following. The Nature editorial did not refute the hypothesis empirically. It signaled that the hypothesis was not welcome in mainstream scientific discourse. That signal had lasting institutional consequences.51

Deeper dive: the institutional reception of morphic resonance

A sociological analysis by Fries, reviewed in Zeitschrift fur Anomalistik (2021), examined Sheldrake’s case as an example of boundary-work between scientific centers and peripheries.51 The analysis found that Sheldrake’s initial rejection by Nature, despite public support for his ideas, shows how critical treatment in elite journals can end academic careers while public discourse compensates for the lack of scientific recognition. The study noted that all three of its case subjects (Sheldrake on morphic fields, Pim van Lommel on near-death research, and Ernst Senkowski on instrumental transcommunication) underwent initial socialization in the scientific establishment before being pushed to the periphery due to unconventional positions. The analysis treated center-periphery positioning as fluid rather than fixed. Near-death research has experienced partial reintegration into mainstream science over time, while morphic resonance has not.

The honest summary is this. Morphic resonance is a bold, specific, and genuinely testable hypothesis. The experiments run so far have not confirmed it. The most rigorous recent test, the Wordle studies, found inconsistent results with effects so small they may be noise. The hypothesis remains alive in fringe and interdisciplinary literature. It has not cleared the bar that mainstream science requires: a robust, independently replicated effect that cannot be explained by known processes.228
