What trends can you see in precognition research?

Trends in precognition research

The retrieved library material lets me sketch a few genuine through-lines, but I should be upfront: the numbered sources here are a thin and heterogeneous slice, so this is a partial picture rather than a comprehensive survey of the field.

Field-maturity as a recurring self-assessment

One durable trend is parapsychology’s own recurring effort to take stock of its trajectory. As early as 1951, a Journal of Parapsychology retrospective was already describing “signs of maturity” in the discipline and trying to name discernible trends rather than make specific predictions [4]. That reflexive stance — the field periodically auditing its own direction — is itself a long-running feature.

From single trials to aggregate patterns

A methodological shift that bears directly on precognition (and psi research generally) is the move away from evaluating any one experiment toward analyzing long-term trends across many studies. That reframing is central to how the field now judges whether an effect is real, and it is bound up with the decline effect — the observation that early strong results often shrink on repetition, which can reflect statistical regression, artifacts, psychology, or something about psi itself. Free-response and altered-state paradigms

On the experimental side, precognition testing broadened beyond forced-choice guessing into free-response techniques, including ganzfeld and dream-state protocols. Sargent and Harley (1982) is an example of applying free-response methods to precognition, and it also reports the kind of within-session temporal trend in scoring (improvement across a subseries) that recurs in this literature [5]. Two important cautions attach to that source, though:

  • Such improving-scoring patterns were noted post-hoc, not pre-specified.
  • The Sargent ganzfeld work carries a contested procedural record — 1970s–80s allegations, rebuttals, a Parapsychological Association investigation, and later reassessments that still disagree. Any use of it must be read in that light [5].
Direction-of-effect complexity

Precognition and related psi data do not trend uniformly “positive.” Zingrone (1989), on the checker/observational effect, discusses phenomena like psi-missing (below-chance scoring) and unusual variance patterns under certain conditions [2] — a reminder that the empirical record includes below-chance and null-direction results, not only confirmatory hits.

An applied / “trend-forecasting” strand

Separately, there is a long applied tradition of using putative precognitive or intuitive perception to anticipate future events — Schwartz’s decades of forecasting work is an example [1][3]. This sits closer to applied prediction than to controlled laboratory precognition, and the two shouldn’t be conflated.

What I can’t responsibly claim

I don’t have audited quantitative evidence (effect sizes, replication rates, meta-analytic figures) for precognition in front of me here, so I won’t put numbers on any of these trends.
