Haunt Phenomena
Haunt phenomena, commonly called hauntings, are strange experiences that keep happening at the same place. They include seeing apparitions, hearing unexplained sounds, feeling touches, and sometimes watching objects move. Different witnesses report the same things at the same site, sometimes across generations. Parapsychology treats hauntings as real-world field cases rather than lab events. Researchers ask whether the experiences come from environmental causes, psychology, or something more controversial: genuine psi or the activity of a surviving personality after death. Methods include collecting and comparing cases, measuring physical conditions on-site, and testing the people who report the experiences.

Key findings
- Hauntings tend to cluster at places with a history of death or tragedy. Italian researcher Ernesto Bozzano analyzed several hundred cases and found roughly 80 percent of haunted locations had such a history.[1]
- Haunting reports are multi-modal. Visual apparitions get the most attention, but auditory, tactile, olfactory, and physical disturbances (moving objects) are all well-documented in the case literature.[2]
- Field investigations by William G. Roll and colleagues often found unusually high electromagnetic and geomagnetic fields at allegedly haunted sites. This raised the idea that long exposure to such fields might trigger mild hallucinations in some people.[3]
- In 1998, engineer Vic Tandy and psychologist Tony Lawrence showed that infrasound at about 19 Hz, below the range humans can hear, can produce dread, cold sweats, and peripheral visual illusions. These closely match classic haunting experiences.[4]
- Surveys consistently show that haunting-type experiences are common. One UK survey found about a third of adults believed in such phenomena, and a notable share claimed personal experience.[5]
- Hauntings differ from poltergeist cases in an important way. Haunting phenomena are tied to a place and happen regardless of who is present. Poltergeist activity, which researchers call recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis (RSPK), tends to follow a specific living person and involves more dramatic physical disturbances.[6]
- Research on individual differences finds that personal traits, including transliminality (a tendency for thoughts and feelings to cross mental boundaries easily), sensory sensitivity, and prior belief, strongly shape whether and how intensely a person has haunting-type experiences at a given location.[7]
Overview
Hauntings hold a unique place in parapsychology. They are spontaneous and tied to specific locations. Unlike Ganzfeld experiments or remote-viewing trials, hauntings cannot be scheduled or repeated on demand. Investigators travel to the site, collect testimony, and measure environmental conditions. They try to connect reported experiences to physical features of the place. That makes the field both rich and hard to study rigorously.
The formal study of apparitions and hauntings began with the founding of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) in London in 1882. The SPR’s early work included hauntings alongside telepathy and hypnosis.[8] The SPR’s landmark Census of Hallucinations (1894) was the first large-scale survey of strange perceptual experiences in the general public. It set the template for later case-collection work. Since then, psychologists, physicists, engineers, and neuroscientists have all brought their tools to bear on the same cluster of reported experiences.
Hauntings matter to parapsychology for at least two reasons. First, they are the most widespread and personally compelling class of apparently paranormal experience. Far more people report a haunting than ever take part in a lab psi experiment. Second, they touch several core questions: the possibility of survival after death (see mediumship research and reincarnation cases research), the idea that environments can store memories, and the role of personal psychology in shaping strange experiences.
Key theories and major figures
Several competing theories have shaped haunt research. No single account has won consensus.
The stone-tape or environmental-imprint hypothesis proposes that emotionally charged events, especially deaths and tragedies, leave lasting traces in the physical fabric of a location. Sensitive people who enter the place later may then “replay” those traces as apparitions or sounds. Harry H. Price formalized one version of this idea as “deferred telepathy.” He proposed a “psychic ether” running through matter, in which strong impressions could persist for years and be picked up by psychically sensitive visitors.[9] Critics within the field pointed out a weakness. Price’s account cannot easily explain apparitions that seem to act with purpose, such as the Cheltenham (Despard) ghost reportedly trying to avoid observers. It also struggles to explain moving objects sometimes reported in hauntings.[10]
Ernesto Bozzano (1862-1943), the leading Italian psychical researcher of his era, compiled several hundred haunting cases and analyzed them systematically.[1] His approach was observational. He catalogued cases from international spiritualist and psychical research literature. He sorted their features and tested each against rival explanations. Bozzano concluded the data best fit a spiritist interpretation: hauntings represent the activity of conscious, surviving personalities of the dead, not mere environmental imprints.[11]
William G. Roll (1926-2012) developed the concept of a psi field. In his model, objects and buildings retain psychic impressions. A sensitive person may contact and read those impressions during a haunting experience.[12] Roll also coined the term recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis (RSPK) for poltergeist-type physical disturbances linked to a living person. He carefully separated this from classical hauntings, which are tied to a place rather than a person. His field investigations involved on-site electromagnetic and geomagnetic measurements, psychological testing of witnesses, and basic ESP and psychokinesis tests where warranted.[3] Roll’s work set ethical and methodological standards that still influence haunt investigation today.
D. Scott Rogo drew together elements from Bozzano, Roll, and Price. He suggested that apparitions in hauntings might be “conscious or semiconscious personality patterns or fragments” trapped in the psi field of a location. As that field gradually normalizes over time, the haunting fades. This fits the observed pattern of many historical hauntings dying out across decades.[13]
Environmental and physical explanations
A major strand of haunt research focuses not on psi but on measurable physical conditions that might produce strange experiences. This work connects to apparitional experiences broadly and has become one of the most active areas in the field.
Infrasound. Vic Tandy of Coventry University and psychologist Tony Lawrence published a landmark paper in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research in 1998. They showed that infrasound, meaning sound below 20 Hz that humans cannot consciously hear, could explain several hallmarks of a haunting.[4] While working in a reportedly haunted laboratory, Tandy felt dread, broke into cold sweats, and saw a grey shape at the edge of his vision. The next day he found his fencing foil vibrating in its vice. He traced the cause to a newly installed extractor fan producing a standing wave at about 19 Hz.[4] Why does 19 Hz matter? It is close to the natural resonant frequency of the human eyeball. That means the sound wave can make the retina vibrate slightly, causing visual disturbances at the edges of vision. Tandy later found elevated infrasound at a reportedly haunted fourteenth-century cellar in Coventry, which supported his hypothesis.[14] Psychologist Richard Wiseman then ran a large concert-hall experiment with 750 participants. In a double-blind setup (neither participants nor experimenters knew when infrasound was playing), exposure to infrasound was linked to more reports of unusual experiences. Subjects could not consciously detect the sound at all.[15]
Electromagnetic fields (EMF). Researchers including Roll, Michael Persinger, Jason Braithwaite, and others have spent decades measuring magnetic fields at reportedly haunted sites and comparing them to control locations.[16] The idea is that unusual EMF patterns might affect activity in the temporal lobe. The temporal lobe is a brain region linked to feelings of presence, visual effects, and unease. Results across studies have been inconsistent, and the proposed mechanism remains contested.
Percipient factors. Studies using standardized psychological tests find that personal traits predict how intensely someone experiences haunt-type phenomena at a given location. The traits measured include transliminality, sensory-processing sensitivity, paranormal belief, and locus of control.[7] This does not by itself rule out a real environmental trigger. But it does show that who is present matters as much as where. The “Haunted People Syndrome” model, developed by James Houran and colleagues, frames recurrent ghostly episodes as an interaction. Heightened sensory sensitivity is activated by an unsettling environment, shaped by belief, and reinforced when one person’s reaction influences others nearby.[17]
Skeptical critiques
Critique 1: Investigators arrive too late
Critique 1: Because hauntings are spontaneous, investigators almost always arrive after the key events. They rely on witness memory rather than direct observation.
Mainstream scientists and organized skeptics have highlighted this as a core problem. Retrospective testimony is vulnerable to memory distortion, suggestion, and confabulation.[18]
Researchers respond by combining testimony with on-site physical measurements (EMF, infrasound, temperature) taken during follow-up visits. This anchors at least part of the investigation in reproducible data rather than memory alone.
Evidence strength: This is a genuine and serious limitation. Physical measurement helps but does not fully solve the problem, since the original experiences remain unobserved by investigators.
Critique 2: Knowing a place is “haunted” shapes what people report
Critique 2: Simply being told a location is haunted makes people more likely to interpret ordinary sensory inputs, shadows, draughts, creaking, as paranormal.
Controlled studies have shown this suggestion effect directly.[19] The 2009 “Haunt” project tried to build an artificially haunted room using infrasound and complex electromagnetic fields. Unusual experiences were predicted more strongly by participants’ prior paranormal belief than by actual exposure to the physical stimuli.[20]
Researchers acknowledge the role of belief and expectation. The percipient-factor tradition treats this as a variable to measure and control, not ignore. The question becomes: even after accounting for belief, is there a residual environmental effect?
Evidence strength: The suggestion effect is well-established. The 2009 Haunt project result is a significant negative finding for the physical-trigger hypothesis, though the study used an artificial setting rather than a naturally occurring haunted site.
Critique 3: Case collection is anecdotal and cannot be independently replicated
Critique 3: The bedrock method of haunt research, collecting and comparing cases that people report on their own, is inherently anecdotal. It does not meet scientific standards for independent replication.
This critique applies to the SPR’s Census of Hallucinations, Bozzano’s compilations, and contemporary surveys alike.
Proponents argue that systematic case collection, when done with clear criteria and large samples, can reveal patterns that are themselves informative. They also point to the environmental-measurement strand as a move toward more replicable methods.
Evidence strength: The replication problem is real. Case collections can identify patterns but cannot establish causation or rule out reporting biases.
Responses and evaluation
Researchers have responded to these challenges in several ways. The environmental-measurement approach records EMF, infrasound, temperature, air pressure, and geomagnetic readings at allegedly haunted sites. It does this alongside collecting witness reports. This tries to move beyond pure testimony. Even if such measurements end up supporting a conventional rather than paranormal account, advocates argue this is still a legitimate scientific contribution.
The percipient-factor research tradition accepts that psychology plays a major role. But it maintains that this does not close the door on genuine anomalous causes. The most productive frame may be an interaction: unusual physical environments plus perceptually sensitive people. Hauntings may be real experiences that are neither purely hallucinatory nor straightforwardly paranormal. This view connects haunt research to cognitive neuroscience and environmental psychology.
The survival question remains open. It is tied to broader debates in near-death experience research, mental mediumship research, and reincarnation cases research. Haunt phenomena alone do not prove survival after death. But the strongest cases are cited by researchers in those overlapping areas as relevant data. These are cases where apparitions convey verifiable information the witness could not have known, or where independent witnesses describe the same figure without prior contact. The field continues to develop stricter case-selection criteria, standardized tools for assessing witnesses, and better physical monitoring equipment to sharpen the evidence base.
