A subsequent analysis from the same dataset examined the self-dimensions of DMT experiences.3 This work documented how DMT produces radical alterations in self-perception, including experiences of ego dissolution, identity transformation, and encounters with alternative versions of the self. The thematic analysis identified multiple domains through which the self is transformed during breakthrough DMT states, with implications for understanding consciousness and its neural correlates.

Most recently, Luke and his collaborators conducted a detailed comparative analysis of DMT experiences and near-death experiences (NDEs).1 This study compared the qualitative content of 36 DMT experiences with 34 written NDE narratives, identifying both canonical NDE themes present in DMT reports and significant phenomenological divergences. The analysis found that 95% of DMT participants reported at least one classical NDE motif, including translocation, bright light, sense of dying, the void, disembodiment, tunnel-like structures, light being-esque entities, deceased family members, life review-like experiences, and hyper-empathic states. However, at a more granular level of qualitative content analysis, DMT and NDEs diverge substantially. DMT experiences are characterized by more “prodigious and stereotypical” features, including kaleidoscopic imagery, extraterrestrial themes, transcultural elements, and overwhelming sensory intensity. The authors conclude that while DMT could be considered an “NDE-mimetic,” the differences likely reflect both contextual factors and the complex neurochemistry of actual near-death states, in which endogenous DMT may play only a partial role.

Luke and his collaborators have also examined psychopharmacological combinations as models of NDEs, specifically investigating changa, a smoked mixture of DMT and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)-containing plants, sometimes called “smokable ayahuasca.”13 Two case studies of individuals who had experienced both NDEs and changa revealed varying degrees of perceived similarity and feature overlap, with one participant reporting high perceived similarity (36% feature overlap) and another reporting medium similarity (42% feature overlap).
