This work emerges from a broader tradition questioning whether endogenous neurochemical processes (particularly those involving tryptamine compounds) might underlie both NDEs and psychedelic-induced states. Luke has approached this question through systematic qualitative analysis of naturalistic DMT use, comparative thematic coding of experiential narratives, and investigation of psychopharmacological combinations that more closely approximate the complex neurochemistry hypothesised to occur near death.

The research is grounded in the recognition that classical laboratory studies of DMT have been limited by clinical settings and lack of detailed qualitative analysis, while online surveys suffer from retrospective bias and uncontrolled conditions. Luke’s naturalistic field methodology, observing experienced users in non-clinical settings and conducting immediate post-experience interviews, has yielded the most detailed phenomenological mapping of breakthrough DMT experiences to date.

DMT and near-death experience parallels

Luke’s collaborative research with Pascal Michael and Oliver Robinson has produced the most systematic comparative analysis of DMT experiences and NDEs. Their landmark study analyzed 36 semi-structured interviews from a naturalistic field study of DMT use, directly comparing the thematic and content structure of these experiences with a novel thematic analysis of 34 written NDE narratives.1

The analysis identified ten ‘canonical NDE themes’ appearing across DMT experiences: Translocation, Bright Light(s), Sense of Dying, The Void, Disembodiment, Tunnel-like Structures, Light Being-esque Entities, Deceased Family, Life Review-like experiences, and Hyper-empathic Experiences. Remarkably, 95% of DMT participants reported at least one of these features. Twelve additional ‘less typical NDE motifs’ were also documented, suggesting that the phenomenological overlap extends beyond the most commonly cited NDE characteristics.1

However, Luke and his colleagues emphasize that while DMT and NDEs share a fundamental phenomenological structure, they diverge significantly in qualitative content. Five classical NDE features were entirely absent from DMT experiences, while DMT exhibited a broader array of features absent from NDEs. Critically, DMT experiences lacked the linear sequencing of themes characteristic of many NDEs. Instead, DMT was distinctly unique in its ‘prodigious and stereotypical nature,’ characterised by kaleidoscopic patterns, extraterrestrial imagery, transcultural elements, fluctuating perceptual states, and overwhelming sensory intensity.1

This methodology yielded 36 post-DMT experience interviews, predominantly from Caucasian (83%) participants, with eight female and 28 male respondents averaging 37 years of age. The interviews were predominantly inductively coded, allowing themes to emerge from the data rather than being imposed by pre-existing theoretical frameworks.2

The analysis revealed two overarching categories of breakthrough DMT experience. The first comprised encounters with other ‘beings’ (reported by 94% of participants) encompassing super-ordinate themes of the entities’ role, appearance, demeanour, communication, and modes of interaction. The second comprised experiences of emerging into other ‘worlds’ (reported by 100% of participants) encompassing themes of the scene, contents, and qualitative properties of immersive spaces. Many further mid-level and sub-level themes illuminated the rich phenomenological texture of these encounters.2

Luke’s emphasis on naturalistic observation and immediate post-experience interviewing addressed a critical gap in the literature. Laboratory settings, he argued, constrain the intensity and authenticity of the experience, while retrospective online surveys introduce memory distortion and selection bias. By observing users in their preferred environments and capturing narratives within minutes of the experience’s conclusion, Luke obtained phenomenologically detailed accounts of breakthrough states that had previously been inadequately documented.

Changa and MAOI-containing combinations

Luke has extended his research beyond pure DMT to investigate psychopharmacological combinations that more closely approximate the complex neurochemistry hypothesised to occur during near-death states. Changa, a smoked admixture of DMT and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)-containing plants, colloquially termed ‘smokable vine of the dead’, represents a particularly valuable model, as it combines multiple psychoactive compounds in ways that may more closely parallel endogenous neurochemical activity near death.3

Luke and his colleagues conducted detailed case studies of two individuals who had experienced both NDEs and changa, making them invaluable for direct comparative analysis. Interviews encompassed the content of both experience types, participants’ reflections on perceived comparability, and quantification of similarity using the Near-Death Experience Scale.3

Case SR, who experienced an NDE from a misaligned vertebra, reported high perceived similarity between his NDE and changa experience. However, detailed content analysis revealed that his changa experience shared only 36% of specific features with his NDE. Despite this, the changa experience exhibited 83% similarity with NDEs at large, and the ordering and presence of features was strikingly NDE-resembling, though expressed through distinctly DMT-like content.3

Case DA, who experienced an NDE from an allergic reaction, reported medium perceived similarity between his NDE and changa experience. His changa experience shared a comparably low-moderate 42% of features with his specific NDE, and appeared to entail more discrepancies with NDEs in general, exhibiting more classically DMT-like characteristics. Yet several features, though DMT-like in content, appeared particularly NDE-resembling.3

Luke interprets these findings in light of semantic analyses and physiological studies suggesting monoaminergic activity near death. The presence of MAOI-containing plants in changa may more closely approximate the neurochemical milieu of the dying brain, potentially explaining why changa experiences show stronger NDE-like features than pure DMT alone, despite still retaining the distinctive phenomenological signature of DMT.

Clinical and theoretical implications

Luke’s research has significant implications for understanding consciousness at the threshold of death and for potential clinical applications. If DMT and related compounds can reliably produce death-like transcendent experiences, they may offer valuable models for studying the neurochemical substrates of NDEs and for investigating how consciousness responds to existential threat and mortality salience.1

The phenomenological parallels between DMT and NDEs suggest that certain features of near-death consciousness (such as disembodiment, encounters with entities, and hyper-empathic states) may be generated by specific neurochemical processes that can be reliably induced pharmacologically. This finding has implications for neuroscientific models of consciousness, suggesting that transcendent death-related experiences may not require actual proximity to death but rather activation of particular neural systems.

Luke notes that the differences between DMT and NDEs are equally informative. The absence of linear sequencing in DMT experiences, the prevalence of kaleidoscopic and extraterrestrial imagery, and the overwhelming intensity of sensory phenomena suggest that the dying brain may involve additional neurochemical systems beyond those activated by DMT alone. This points toward the complexity of near-death neurochemistry and the limitations of any single-compound model.1

Luke’s earlier survey work, conducted with Kittenis, documented paranormal experiences reported in association with psychoactive drug use, suggesting that the intersection of psychedelics and anomalous experience warrants sustained empirical attention.4 His research program thus bridges parapsychology and psychopharmacology, investigating whether the transcendent and ontologically challenging experiences produced by psychoactive substances may include phenomena traditionally studied within parapsychology.
