Anomalous Cognition and Mediumship Phenomena

Dean Radin‘s research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences has examined anomalous cognition, the apparent acquisition of information beyond ordinary sensory channels, across a range of phenomena including mediumship, channeling, telephone telepathy, and intuitive assessment of mortality. A persistent challenge in this domain is that effect sizes are typically small and state-dependent, meaning that dismissal based on any single underpowered study risks a Type-II error; the cumulative evidence across paradigms is therefore more informative than any individual experiment.

Overview

Anomalous cognition research investigates whether humans can acquire information about people, objects, or events through channels other than the known senses. Radin’s contributions to this area span laboratory experiments on mediumship, channeling phenomenology, telephone telepathy, intuitive mortality assessment, and large-scale online precognition studies. His approach consistently combines physiological or behavioral outcome measures with blinded protocols designed to address the most common artifact: sensory leakage, the inadvertent transmission of cues through ordinary channels that could mimic a genuine anomalous effect.89

Scope and Paradigm Diversity in Radin’s Anomalous Cognition Work

Radin’s anomalous cognition program spans multiple paradigms: (1) mediumship, blinded accuracy testing and electrocortical recording during claimed communication with deceased individuals 12; (2) channeling phenomenology, qualitative and quantitative characterization of full-trance channelers 4; (3) telephone telepathy, forced-choice identification of callers 5; (4) intuitive mortality assessment from facial photographs 10; and (5) large-scale online precognition experiments 7. The breadth reflects a strategy of triangulating across independent paradigms rather than relying on any single experimental design. Most studies are explicitly labeled exploratory by the authors, reflecting the early-stage nature of the research program.

Mediumship and Channeling Research

Radin and collaborator Arnaud Delorme conducted a blinded mediumship study in which self-identified mediums and non-medium controls performed an image classification task while EEG was recorded. The study was designed to test whether mediums’ claimed ability to access information about deceased individuals would manifest as above-chance accuracy on a structured task, and whether any accuracy differences would be accompanied by distinctive electrocortical signatures.1

Blinded Mediumship EEG Study, Methodology and Results

Delorme, Beischel, Michel, Boccuzzi, Radin, and Mills recorded electrocortical activity in mediums and controls during a structured image-classification task designed to probe claimed communication with deceased individuals. The study examined whether mediums’ performance accuracy differed from controls and whether EEG patterns during claimed communication differed from baseline. Results indicated accuracy differences between groups and distinctive electrocortical patterns in mediums during the task condition, though the authors characterized the findings as exploratory and noted that sample sizes were small. The specific artifact addressed was sensory leakage: images were presented in a blinded, computer-controlled sequence, and raters were unaware of participant group membership during scoring. The strength of ruling-out for sensory leakage was mitigated but not eliminated, as experimenter-participant interaction during setup remained a partially unresolved confound.12

A separate phenomenological study examined full-trance channeling, a practice in which an individual enters a dissociated state with the intention of allowing an external intelligence to communicate through them. Five full-trance channelers participated in a pilot study at Mt. Shasta, California, contributing demographic, personality, spirituality, and dissociation data alongside qualitative accounts of their experiences.4

Full-Trance Channeling Phenomenology, Pilot Study

Wahbeh, Carpenter, and Radin invited five full-trance channelers to a structured pilot study. Prior to the event, participants completed measures of demographics, spirituality, religious background, medication use, personality, and dissociation. During channeling sessions, physiological and behavioral data were recorded. The study was explicitly phenomenological and exploratory in design, with N=5 precluding inferential generalization. The primary artifact addressed was demand characteristics: participants were not told what outcomes were expected, and measures were standardized. The strength of ruling-out for demand characteristics was partially addressed. The researchers noted that full-trance channeling had received little systematic scientific attention and that this study was intended to establish a conceptual framework for future work.4

Research on the psychological profile of people who report mediumship experiences found that this group scored higher on standardized dissociation measures than non-mediums, but that scores remained below clinical thresholds, suggesting that mediumship-related dissociation is a non-pathological variant of a normal psychological continuum rather than a marker of disorder.3

Dissociation Scores in Mediums vs. Non-Mediums

Wahbeh and Radin compared dissociation symptom scores (using a standardized dissociation inventory) between individuals who self-reported mediumship experiences and those who did not. The mediumship group scored significantly higher on dissociation measures, but mean scores remained below the clinical threshold for pathological dissociation disorder. The study was published as a research note in F1000Research and underwent open peer review, with two reviewers approving and one not approving. The primary artifact addressed was sampling bias: the study used self-selected volunteers, and the authors acknowledged that this limits generalizability. The proposed mechanism, that mediumship involves a non-pathological dissociative capacity, remains the researchers’ preferred interpretation; alternative interpretations include that dissociation-prone individuals are more likely to interpret ordinary experiences as mediumistic.311

Anomalous Cognition Experiments

Radin and collaborators have tested anomalous cognition in several behavioral paradigms. A telephone telepathy study asked participants to guess which of several known individuals was calling them before answering; accuracy rates and neural correlates were assessed in a sample drawn from opportunity recruitment.5 A separate line of work used eye-tracking and pupillometry to test whether participants’ ocular responses before viewing emotional photographs differed depending on the emotional valence of the photograph about to be randomly selected, a behavioral analogue of presentiment.12

Telephone Telepathy Study, Design and Artifact Mitigation

Wahbeh, Cannard, Radin, and Delorme conducted a telephone telepathy study in which participants attempted to identify which of several known callers was on the line before answering. The primary artifact addressed was sensory leakage: caller identity was randomized and concealed from both participant and experimenter during the trial, eliminating direct cueing. Response bias, the tendency to guess certain callers more frequently regardless of who was actually calling, was assessed statistically. The companion dataset was made publicly available via Figshare to allow independent reanalysis, partially addressing the file-drawer artifact by enabling scrutiny of the raw data.513 The proposed mechanism, that participants accessed information about the caller’s identity through a non-sensory channel, remains the researchers’ preferred interpretation; the alternative interpretation is that above-chance accuracy, if present, reflects subtle sensory cues not fully controlled by the blinding procedure.

A large-scale online precognition experiment running from August 2000 to December 2018 collected 114 million trials from an estimated 200,000 participants worldwide using a five-target forced-choice protocol. The overall hit rate was consistent with chance, but a planned secondary analysis designed to detect a predicted sequential pattern in the data yielded a statistically striking result.7

19-Year Online Psi Experiment, Sequential Analysis Results

Radin’s “Tricking the Trickster” analysis of two online psi experiments (combined N ≈ 200,000 participants, 114 million trials, five-target forced-choice protocol) found that the overall hit rate was null, consistent with chance expectation. However, a planned secondary analysis examining sequential structure in the data found that the probability of a correct response following a correct response (p1) deviated from the chance-expected rate (p0 = 0.32) by a small but statistically unambiguous margin: combined observed p1 = 0.320502 ± 0.000044, z = 11.28, p = 1.7 × 10⁻²⁹. Control tests found no evidence that this sequential deviation arose from artifacts in the random number generator or from optional stopping. The primary artifact addressed was multiple comparisons: the sequential analysis was described as planned rather than post-hoc, though the absence of a public preregistration record means this claim cannot be independently verified, leaving the analysis provenance partially unresolved. The proposed mechanism, that psi effects manifest as sequential dependencies rather than overall hit-rate elevations, is the researcher’s preferred interpretation; the alternative is that the sequential pattern reflects an undetected artifact in the online data-collection pipeline.7

An exploratory study examined whether individuals with claimed intuitive abilities could accurately assess mortality from facial photographs, a test of anomalous cognition in a naturalistic domain. Twelve self-identified intuitives attempted to determine whether photographed individuals were alive or dead based solely on brief examination of standardized grayscale photographs.10

Intuitive Mortality Assessment, Behavioral, EEG, and Machine Learning Analyses

Delorme, Pierce, Michel, and Radin invited 12 individuals who claimed to intuitively gauge mortality from photographs to participate in a structured test. All photographs were converted to uniform grayscale and counterbalanced across eight visual categories to eliminate confounding cues that might allow ordinary inference (e.g., apparent age, health markers visible in color images). Behavioral accuracy, electrocortical activity (EEG), and machine learning classification of neural patterns were analyzed. The study was explicitly exploratory with N=12, precluding strong inferential conclusions. The primary artifact addressed was judging contamination: the grayscale transformation and counterbalancing were designed to eliminate ordinary visual cues that could support above-chance accuracy without anomalous cognition. The strength of ruling-out was mitigated but not eliminated, as subtle residual cues in standardized photographs cannot be fully excluded.10 Note: a related Frontiers in Human Neuroscience paper by the same group was subsequently retracted 14; the retracted paper’s evidence yields no conclusion in either direction because of the documented retraction. The EXPLORE study 10 is a separate publication and is not affected by that retraction.

Evidence Bearing on Survival of Consciousness

Radin, Delorme, and Wahbeh conducted a structured evidence-rating exercise adapted from medical research methodology to assess the persuasiveness of empirical evidence for survival of consciousness after bodily death. The exercise asked researchers to rate different categories of evidence, including near-death experiences, mediumship studies, reincarnation research, and apparition cases, using a standardized rubric.6

Survival Evidence Rating Exercise, Methodology and Findings

Wahbeh, Delorme, and Radin adapted a method used in medical evidence synthesis to rate the persuasiveness of different categories of survival-relevant evidence. Raters evaluated controlled, prospective experiments as well as case studies across categories including near-death experiences with veridical out-of-body perceptions, mediumship studies, reincarnation research, and apparition cases. The most frequently selected controlled, prospective experiment rated as potentially persuasive was veridical out-of-body perception during a near-death experience. Mediumship and reincarnation studies were also rated as potentially persuasive by a subset of raters. The exercise was explicitly not a meta-analysis and did not produce quantitative effect-size estimates; it was a structured expert-opinion exercise. The primary limitation acknowledged by the authors was that rater selection and rating criteria introduce subjectivity that limits generalizability of the conclusions.6 A related essay submitted to the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies contest reviewed the broader evidence landscape for survival, concluding that some evidence categories are stronger than skeptics typically acknowledge while stopping short of claiming proof.15

Radin and collaborators have also engaged with the theoretical framing of survival-relevant evidence, responding to critiques of the Bigelow Institute essay contest and arguing that some survival-type evidence is more methodologically robust than standard skeptical dismissals acknowledge.16

Response to Augustine’s Critique of the BICS Contest

Braude, Barušs, Delorme, Radin, and Wahbeh published a commentary responding to Keith Augustine’s critical evaluation of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest on survival evidence. The response argued that Augustine’s critique rehearsed familiar objections without adequately engaging with the strongest evidence categories, and that methodological problems in survival-type studies do not uniformly undermine all evidence. The commentary did not present new empirical data; it was a theoretical and methodological argument. The primary claim, that some survival evidence is stronger than skeptics conclude, is the researchers’ preferred interpretation and remains contested in the literature.16

Modern Context

Anomalous-cognition claims — whether framed as remote viewing, mediumship-channelled information, or other reports of veridical perception without sensory input — rest on the prior assumption that participants are reliably distinguishing genuinely perceived information from memory, imagination, or other internally generated content. Johnson, Hashtroudi, and Lindsay’s 1993 Psychological Bulletin source-monitoring framework documents the cognitive processes by which the brain attributes information to its origin and the systematic errors that arise when those attributions fail, including misremembering imagined events as perceived and confusing the source of heard versus seen content.[20] Larøi and colleagues’ 2012 state-of-the-art review of auditory verbal hallucinations in Schizophrenia Bulletin further establishes that mainstream cognitive neuroscience treats hallucinatory experience as a continuum present in both clinical and nonclinical populations, with shared characteristic features across groups.[21] Anomalous-cognition claims must therefore demonstrate signal that exceeds what source-monitoring failure rates and continuum-distributed hallucinatory phenomena already predict.

Skeptical Critiques and Discussion

Critique 1: Anomalous anticipatory skin conductance responses reflect conventional anticipation mechanisms, not precognition

Skeptic source: May, Paulinyi, and Vassy argued that anomalous anticipatory electrodermal responses, including those reported in Radin’s presentiment paradigm, can be explained by Decision Augmentation Theory (DAT) and conventional anticipation mechanisms rather than by genuine precognition. Their position was that participants may unconsciously use existing information to bias their responses in ways that mimic anticipatory effects, without any retrocausal information transfer.17

Response: Radin published a direct response to May et al.’s paper, contesting the applicability of DAT to the presentiment EDA paradigm and arguing that the experimental design, in which stimuli are selected by a truly random process after the physiological response window, structurally precludes the conventional anticipation account May et al. proposed. Radin’s replication studies using new hardware, software, stimulus sets, and participant populations across three experiments (N=109 participants, 3,709 trials) again found higher EDA before emotional photographs than before calm photographs (p = 0.001), with the design specifically addressing the sensory leakage artifact by using computer-controlled random stimulus selection after the pre-stimulus window.1819

Analysis. The DAT account and the retrocausal account make different predictions about the structure of anticipatory effects. A jointly agreed-upon critical test that would empirically distinguish the two accounts has not been published.

Critique 2: Retracted mortality-prediction paper raises questions about data quality in anomalous cognition research

Skeptic source: A paper by Delorme, Pierce, Michel, and Radin on prediction of mortality based on facial characteristics was published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and subsequently retracted.14 The retraction represents a documented flaw in one component of the anomalous cognition literature associated with this research group.

Response: Per the C28 doctrine, the retracted paper yields zero evidential weight in either direction, it neither supports nor refutes anomalous cognition claims because its documented status as retracted means its findings cannot be relied upon. A separate EXPLORE publication by Delorme, Pierce, Michel, and Radin on intuitive assessment of mortality using behavioral, electrocortical, and machine learning analyses is a distinct study not affected by the Frontiers retraction.10 That study’s findings remain in the exploratory literature but require independent replication before conclusions can be drawn.

Analysis. for the retracted paper specifically, this evidence yields no conclusion either way because the paper was retracted. The EXPLORE study is separate and carries its own exploratory-tier evidentiary weight.
