Overview
Radin’s interest in meditation as a psi moderator stems from a broader theoretical position: if consciousness plays a causal role in physical systems, then states of heightened, stable attention should produce more detectable effects than ordinary distracted awareness. He has articulated this position across multiple venues, arguing that the ancient contemplative literature, particularly the yoga siddhis described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, constitutes a pre-scientific record of psi phenomena that modern laboratory methods can now test systematically.6 He has also contributed to broader calls within the contemplative science community to incorporate psi-related hypotheses into mainstream meditation research agendas.5 A key Type-II vulnerability in this literature is that psi effect sizes are typically small (r ≈ 0.01–0.05 in meta-analyses of unselected populations), and state-dependent moderators like meditative depth are rarely controlled in standard psi experiments, meaning that null results in unselected samples may systematically underestimate effects in trained practitioners.
Siddhis and the Scientific Framing of Contemplative Psi
In Supernormal, Radin reviewed the classical yoga literature alongside modern parapsychological databases, arguing that phenomena described as siddhis, including clairvoyance, telepathy, and precognition, correspond structurally to laboratory-tested psi phenomena.6 The proposed mechanism, that deep meditative absorption reduces the cognitive noise that ordinarily masks psi signals, remains the researcher’s preferred interpretive framework; alternative interpretations include demand characteristics in practitioner populations, selection bias toward high-belief participants, and regression to the mean in small samples. No consensus interpretation has emerged.
Meditators and Prestimulus EEG
One of Radin’s most methodologically specific contributions to the meditation-psi question is a controlled EEG study comparing experienced meditators with matched non-meditators on prestimulus neural responses to randomly selected stimuli. The study found that meditators showed greater differentiation in electrocortical activity before emotional versus neutral stimuli, a pattern consistent with the presentiment effect but potentially amplified by meditative training.1

The experiment enrolled eight experienced meditators and eight matched controls (N=16 total; small convenience sample, selection criteria based on self-reported meditation experience). Thirty-two channels of EEG were recorded before, during, and after exposure to unpredictable light and sound stimuli selected by a truly random process. The primary hypothesis was that prestimulus electrocortical signals would differ depending on the upcoming stimulus type, and that this difference would be more pronounced in meditators.1 The study was exploratory in design; the small N severely limits statistical power and generalizability. The specific artifact of optional stopping was partially addressed by the fixed-N design, but multiple-comparisons risk across 32 EEG channels was not fully resolved. The researcher’s preferred interpretation is that meditative training enhances sensitivity to future-oriented neural signals; alternative non-psi interpretations include differential baseline arousal between meditators and controls, and group differences in habituation to repeated stimuli.
Yoga Practitioners and Precognition
A 2025 study published in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research investigated precognition specifically in yoga practitioners, extending the meditation-psi hypothesis to a distinct contemplative tradition with its own attentional training protocols.2 The study was conducted in collaboration with researchers at a yoga institution, providing access to a practitioner population with documented training histories, a methodological improvement over convenience samples of self-identified meditators.
Precognition in Yoga Practitioners, Study Design and Context
The study by Alibalaei, Radin, Ilavarasu, and Nagendra comprised four preregistered components conducted online during the COVID-19 lockdowns: three forced-choice precognition experiments and one questionnaire study.2 Experiment 1 used a pre/post design around a short-term yoga course (N = 104); Experiment 2 a pre/post design with meditation as the intervention (N = 103); Experiment 3 a one-time comparison of participants with low versus high yoga experience (N = 164); and a fourth questionnaire study (N = 245) examined correlations between precognition performance and gender, age, education, and reports of unusual childhood experiences, using the Gunas Scale, the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, and a Mysticism Scale. The hypotheses were preregistered with the Open Science Framework, and none of the experimental precognition outcomes reached statistical significance — a preregistered null result. Because the primary hypotheses were registered in advance and not supported, this study is a useful counterweight to expectancy-bias concerns: a believing practitioner population did not produce inflated hit rates, consistent with the absence of a genuine precognition effect under these conditions.
Intention, Meditation, and Treated Substances
A distinct but related line of research tests whether meditators or practitioners can impart detectable effects into physical substances through focused intention, a paradigm that operationalizes the meditation-psi hypothesis in a different modality. Radin and collaborators conducted randomized double-blind trials using intentionally treated tea, chocolate, and water, with Buddhist monks or experienced practitioners as the intention sources.
Tea Ceremony Randomized Trial, Design and Results
Shiah and Radin conducted a randomized, double-blind trial in which participants consumed oolong tea intentionally treated by three Buddhist monks or untreated tea from the same source over three days, recording mood via the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire.3 Stratified random sampling was used for group assignment. The study addressed the artifact of demand characteristics by blinding participants to treatment condition; it also assessed belief about treatment type as a moderating variable, finding that belief interacted with actual treatment condition. The specific artifact of experimenter cueing was mitigated by the double-blind protocol. However, the study was exploratory and the sample size was not reported in the available extract, limiting power assessment. The researcher’s preferred interpretation is that monk intention transferred a detectable influence to the tea; alternative non-psi interpretations include subtle physical differences between treated and untreated batches not fully controlled by the blinding procedure.
A parallel study tested intentionally treated chocolate under double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled conditions, finding mood enhancement in the treated group relative to untreated controls.7 Subsequent work extended the paradigm to plant biology, testing whether water treated by Buddhist monks affected the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seeds under double-blind conditions.8
Intentionally Treated Water and Plant Growth Studies
Shiah, Hsieh, Chen, and Radin tested whether Arabidopsis thaliana seeds hydrated with water intentionally treated by three Buddhist monks showed differences in hypocotyl length, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll compared to seeds hydrated with untreated water from the same source.8 The double-blind design addressed the artifact of experimenter expectancy in plant measurement. Seeds with cryptochrome mutations were included to probe possible light-pathway mechanisms. A competing non-psi explanation is that minor physical differences in water handling between treated and untreated batches, temperature, agitation, container differences, could produce differential plant growth without any intention effect; the study’s blinding procedure partially mitigated but did not fully eliminate this possibility. A follow-up study replicated the basic design with mesenchymal stem cells.9
Group meditation was also tested as a potential source of RNG anomalies in a study by Mason, Patterson, and Radin, in which a true RNG was co-located with large Transcendental Meditation group sessions.4
Group Meditation and RNG Anomalies, Mason, Patterson, and Radin
The study collected 94 hours and 33,927 trials of truly random bit data during Transcendental Meditation group sessions (average 261 female, 398 male participants per session) using a true RNG located in a large meditation hall.4 The study was exploratory. The primary artifact risk in RNG-group studies is environmental confounding: large groups in a building may produce temperature, vibration, or electromagnetic fluctuations that affect hardware RNG output through physical rather than psi mechanisms. The study did not report specific environmental monitoring controls for these physical confounders. The researcher’s preferred interpretation is that collective coherent attention produces anomalous structure in random physical systems; alternative interpretations include unmonitored environmental artifacts and multiple-comparisons inflation across analysis variants.
Theoretical and Contemplative Context
Radin has contributed to theoretical frameworks that attempt to situate meditation-psi findings within broader models of consciousness. With Kauffman, he proposed a quantum model of the brain-mind relationship in which consciousness is not reducible to classical neural computation, providing a theoretical context in which meditative states might alter the boundary conditions of quantum measurement.10 He has also co-authored a review challenging materialist models of consciousness by cataloging empirical anomalies, including psi findings, that are difficult to accommodate within a purely brain-emergent framework.11
Nonlocal Mind and Meditation, Editorial and Theoretical Positions
In a guest editorial, Radin argued that the rapid mainstreaming of meditation research, evidenced by successive Time magazine cover stories from 1975 to 2014, created an opportunity to incorporate psi-related hypotheses into contemplative science without the stigma that attaches to parapsychology as a standalone discipline.12 The proposed mechanism, that meditation cultivates a “nonlocal mind” capable of information access beyond ordinary sensory constraints, is the researcher’s preferred interpretive framework and remains contested. A multi-author paper in PLOS ONE, co-authored by Radin alongside researchers from mainstream contemplative science institutions, formally recommended that future meditation research expand to include psi-related phenomena as legitimate scientific targets.5 The paper also engaged with the relationship between parapsychology and transpersonal psychology as adjacent disciplines that have historically developed in parallel without sufficient dialogue.13
Modern Context
The meditation-psi hypothesis sits at the intersection of two active mainstream research areas: the neuroscience of attention and the psychology of expectancy effects. Radin’s multi-author PLOS ONE paper on future directions in meditation research5 was co-authored with researchers from mainstream contemplative science institutions including the University of Southern California, Oregon Health and Science University, and the University of California San Francisco, providing an external anchor in peer-reviewed contemplative neuroscience. The challenge for the meditation-psi program is that mainstream attention research has developed rigorous paradigms for measuring attentional state (e.g., sustained attention to response task, mind-wandering probes) that are rarely incorporated into psi studies, making it difficult to verify that meditator-nonmeditator differences in psi performance are actually mediated by attentional state rather than by correlated variables such as belief, personality, or expectancy. The Wahbeh, Radin, and Delorme review of challenges to materialist consciousness models11 engages with mainstream consciousness science literature in Frontiers in Psychology, situating the psi anomalies within a broader empirical debate about the sufficiency of brain-emergent models, a debate that extends well beyond parapsychology into philosophy of mind and cognitive neuroscience.
Skeptical Critiques and Discussion
Critique 1: Claim: Anomalous anticipatory physiological responses reflect conventional anticipation mechanisms or Decision Augmentation Theory, not precognition or meditation-enhanced psi
Skeptic source: May, Paulinyi, and Vassy argued that anomalous anticipatory skin conductance responses, the physiological signature central to Radin’s presentiment paradigm and to the meditation-psi EEG work, can be explained by Decision Augmentation Theory (DAT), which proposes that apparent psi effects arise from unconscious use of existing sensory information to bias decisions, rather than from genuine retrocausal influence. They conducted their own EDA experiments and argued that conventional anticipation mechanisms were sufficient to account for the reported effects.14
Response: Radin published a direct response to May et al., contesting the applicability of DAT to the presentiment paradigm on the grounds that the stimulus sequences were generated by truly random processes, eliminating the sensory information that DAT requires as its input. He argued that the EDA differentiation before emotional versus neutral stimuli, observed across multiple replications with different participant populations, hardware, and testing environments, cannot be attributed to unconscious sensory cueing when no sensory information about upcoming stimuli exists prior to their random selection.15 The meditator EEG study specifically addressed the question of whether attentional training modulates this effect, finding greater prestimulus differentiation in experienced meditators than in matched controls, a pattern that DAT does not predict.1 A meta-analysis of predictive anticipatory activity across multiple laboratories, co-authored by Radin with Mossbridge, Tressoldi, Utts, Ives, and Jonas, found that the effect was present across independent research groups using different physiological measures, partially addressing the artifact of single-lab replication bias.16
Analysis. The DAT critique and the presentiment rebuttal both engage the same primary corpus. The meta-analytic evidence across independent laboratories provides moderate support for the existence of a prestimulus physiological effect. The specific claim that meditation enhances the effect rests on a single small exploratory study (N=16) and is underpowered for definitive conclusions.
Critique 2: Claim: Intention-treated substance studies are vulnerable to uncontrolled physical confounders and demand characteristics that can produce apparent effects without genuine psi
Skeptic source: A methodological critique applicable to the intentionally treated tea, chocolate, and water studies is that double-blind protocols in substance-treatment paradigms are difficult to implement without residual physical differences between treated and untreated batches. Handling differences, temperature variation, container effects, and experimenter contact time with treated versus untreated samples can introduce physical confounders that are not eliminated by blinding judges to treatment condition. Additionally, in mood-outcome studies, demand characteristics, participants’ expectations about which tea or chocolate they received, can inflate apparent treatment effects even under blinded conditions if the blinding is imperfect. This critique is implicit in the design of the studies themselves, which acknowledge the exploratory nature of the findings.3
Response: Radin and collaborators addressed the demand characteristics artifact in the tea study by explicitly measuring and analyzing participants’ beliefs about which tea they had received, finding that belief about treatment type moderated outcomes, a finding that partially disentangles expectancy from actual treatment effects.3 The extension of the paradigm to plant biology (Arabidopsis thaliana growth) and cell culture systems removes the demand characteristics artifact entirely, since plants and cells cannot hold expectations.89 However, physical confounders in water handling remain partially addressed rather than eliminated across these studies. All findings in this line are explicitly characterized as exploratory, and independent replication by laboratories without institutional connection to IONS has not been reported in the available pool.
Analysis. Individual exploratory studies with double-blind designs provide suggestive results, but the combination of small samples, exploratory status, and unresolved physical-confounder questions means the evidence is insufficient for strong conclusions. The biological-system extensions partially address demand characteristics but introduce new methodological questions about physical handling controls.
