This dataset encompassed 185 experiments, the majority involving telepathy or clairvoyance card tasks. By calculating standardized effect sizes for each experiment and correlating them with geomagnetic activity indices from the year preceding the experimental period, they tested whether psi performance varied with magnetic conditions.

Persinger also examined precognitive experiences and postmortem impressions using the same geomagnetic framework.6 The data indicated that subjective precognitive experiences and reports of contact with the deceased similarly clustered during periods of geomagnetic quietude, extending the geomagnetic hypothesis beyond telepathy to other categories of anomalous experience.
Dream telepathy and geomagnetic correlations
Persinger and Stanley Krippner reanalyzed the Maimonides Medical Center dream telepathy experiments, a landmark series in which subjects attempted to receive telepathic impressions of randomly selected target images while dreaming. The original studies had demonstrated significant correspondences between dream content and target material. The effect size enhancement during quiet geomagnetic periods paralleled the patterns observed in historical card-guessing experiments, suggesting a consistent environmental modulation across different psi paradigms.
Theoretical framework and mechanisms
Persinger proposed that geomagnetic activity influenced psi performance through effects on limbic system function, particularly the hippocampus and amygdala. He hypothesized that alterations in limbic lability (the ease with which these structures could be activated or modulated) facilitated psi experiences.1 During periods of quiet geomagnetic activity, reduced electromagnetic perturbation of the brain’s electromagnetic environment might allow more stable or sensitive neural processing of non-sensory information.
The theoretical mechanism remained speculative, but Persinger suggested that psi phenomena involved direct stimulation of neurocognitive processes rather than access through conventional sensory modalities. If memory itself served as the receptive organ for psi experiences, as some theorists proposed, then conditions promoting optimal limbic function would enhance psi performance. Geomagnetic quietude might provide such conditions by reducing electromagnetic noise in the environment and allowing more coherent neural activity patterns.
Persinger’s framework was consistent with his broader research on temporal lobe function and anomalous experiences. He viewed the geomagnetic effect as one component of a larger neurophysiological system in which environmental electromagnetic conditions, brain structure, and subjective experience interacted. The temporal lobes, with their rich connections to limbic structures and their involvement in memory and emotion, appeared central to both spontaneous paranormal experiences and laboratory psi performance.
Replication across datasets
A critical strength of Persinger’s geomagnetic research was the breadth of datasets examined. Beyond the historical card-guessing experiments and spontaneous-case collections, he and his collaborators tested the hypothesis against contemporary laboratory data. Makarec and Persinger conducted a single-subject card-guessing experiment in which anomalous cognition accuracy was significantly facilitated during geomagnetically quiet days.4 This direct experimental test provided prospective confirmation of the historical correlations.
Persinger also noted that Stephen Spottiswoode, an independent researcher, had confirmed the geomagnetic effect in four major datasets from different laboratory groups. Importantly, Spottiswoode found that statistically significant negative correlations between psi performance and geomagnetic activity were present only in those portions of datasets where psi effects were actually demonstrated; the correlations were absent from data showing no anomalous cognition.1 This specificity (the effect appearing only where psi was present) strengthened the case for a genuine relationship rather than a spurious correlation.
