Only about 5% of the general population experiences lucid dreams at least once per week, and the median frequency in unselected student samples is approximately 0.65 to 1.27 lucid dreams per month.2
Age emerges as a significant predictor of lucid dream prevalence. Schredl’s analysis of adolescent samples revealed a clear developmental trajectory: lucid dream prevalence increases from approximately 25% in 6-year-olds to 44% in 10-year-olds and reaches 56% by age 18.1 In young adults (18–21 years), prevalence rises further to 73.4%, suggesting that the capacity for lucidity continues to develop into early adulthood. Approximately 60% of adults report that their lucid dreams began before age 18, indicating that the adolescent period is critical for the onset of lucid dreaming.1
Gender differences in lucid dream frequency are minimal or absent. Although one early study reported a very small gender effect (d = 0.091), this finding was not replicated in subsequent research with larger samples, and Schredl’s work with adults similarly found no meaningful gender differences.1
Schredl developed standardized frequency scales to measure lucid dream occurrence reliably. His eight-point lucid dream frequency scale, which ranges from “never” to “several times per week,” demonstrates high test-retest reliability and does not substantially increase dream recall the way daily dream diaries can.5 This methodological contribution has become widely adopted in the field, allowing researchers to compare results across studies and populations.
Induction techniques and their effectiveness
Schredl has systematically evaluated the two most accessible and widely practiced cognitive induction techniques: reality testing and autosuggestion. Both methods can be performed in the home setting without specialized equipment, making them attractive for research and practical application.
Reality testing. This technique involves asking oneself 5 to 10 times per day whether one is dreaming or awake and examining the environment for incongruences with the laws of waking reality. Early field studies suggested that five of six investigations found reality testing effective in increasing lucid dream frequency.2 However, more recent controlled studies with training periods of one to three weeks have yielded inconsistent results, with some finding no significant effect on lucid dream frequency.2 Schredl’s four-week diary study directly compared reality testing with autosuggestion and found that both methods produced increases in lucid dream frequency, though the magnitude of effect varied across participants.2
Autosuggestion. This technique involves suggesting to oneself before sleep that one will have a lucid dream during the night. The empirical evidence for autosuggestion is limited and heterogeneous. One early study found no effect of one-week autosuggestion training, whereas a later investigation using an eight-week training period obtained significant increases in lucid dream frequency.2 This pattern suggests that training duration may be a critical moderator of effectiveness. Schredl’s comparative work indicates that reality testing may be more effective than autosuggestion when both are practiced for the same duration, consistent with earlier cross-over designs.2
Dream diary keeping. Maintaining a dream diary is a foundational technique that increases overall dream recall and can enhance lucid dream frequency, particularly among participants who are motivated to increase their lucidity. However, Schredl’s research suggests that the effect of diary keeping alone is modest in unselected samples; the increase in lucid dream frequency is more pronounced when participants are explicitly interested in lucid dreaming.4
Wake-up-back-to-bed (WBTB) technique. This method involves sleeping for approximately six hours, waking for about one hour, and then returning to sleep. During the waking period, participants engage in cognitive activities or review dream content. Schredl’s research indicates that WBTB is among the more effective cognitive techniques, particularly when combined with other methods.4
Schredl’s four-week induction study with 81 participants (59 women, 22 men) directly tested the comparative effectiveness of reality testing and autosuggestion under controlled conditions. Participants were randomized into either the reality check group (N = 40) or the autosuggestion group (N = 41) and kept dream diaries for four weeks. Both groups showed increases in lucid dream frequency, though the pattern of results suggested that reality testing may have a slight advantage, consistent with Schredl’s hypothesis based on earlier work.2
Knowledge and awareness of lucid dreaming
Schredl’s research has revealed that public knowledge of lucid dreaming is surprisingly limited, despite growing popular interest. In a study of adolescents and young adults, only 31% had heard of lucid dreaming or the German term “Klartraum” prior to participating in research.1 In an older adult sample (mean age approximately 52 years), the figure was even lower, with only 10% having encountered information about lucid dreams through books, the internet, or friends.6 In contrast, among psychology students and other participants actively recruited for lucid dream studies, approximately 54% had prior knowledge of the phenomenon.6
Schredl has also examined how knowledge of lucid dreaming relates to its frequency. Children and adolescents who read fantasy or science fiction books report more frequent lucid dreams, suggesting that exposure to imaginative narratives may facilitate lucid dreaming.1 Openness to experience (a personality trait reflecting curiosity and receptiveness to new ideas) correlates positively with lucid dream frequency in both children and adults, further suggesting that cognitive engagement and imaginative capacity support lucidity.1
Schredl’s online survey of general knowledge about lucid dreaming and induction techniques found that awareness of specific methods varies widely. While some participants could describe reality testing or autosuggestion, detailed knowledge of more complex techniques such as the Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD) or the Wake-up-back-to-bed method was less common in the general population.6 This gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness has implications for both research recruitment and the potential for wider adoption of induction techniques.
Dream characteristics in lucid versus non-lucid dreams
Beyond measuring frequency, Schredl has investigated how lucid dreams differ from ordinary dreams in their phenomenological properties. His single-case analysis of a long dream series spanning 23 years and 8,420 recorded dreams examined differences in emotional tone, bizarreness, and narrative structure between lucid and non-lucid dreams.3
Emotional tone. Anecdotal evidence and multiple studies suggest that lucid dreams are more positively toned than non-lucid dreams, particularly because lucid dreamers can deliberately engage in pleasant activities such as flying or sexual experiences.3 However, the empirical literature is heterogeneous. While several investigations corroborate greater positive emotions in lucid dreams, others report no significant difference in emotional tone between lucid and non-lucid dreams, and some document instances of negative emotions within lucid dreams.3 Schredl notes that lucid nightmares, dreams in which the dreamer is aware of dreaming but unable to control the nightmare or deliberately wake, occur in approximately 7% to 10% of lucid dreams, indicating that lucidity does not guarantee positive experience.3
Dream bizarreness. The relationship between lucidity and dream bizarreness is similarly inconclusive. Although one study found that lucidity levels correlated positively with dream bizarreness, several others, including Schredl’s own analyses, found no significant differences in bizarreness between lucid, ordinary, and vivid dreams.3 This suggests that the distinctive feature of lucid dreams is not necessarily increased strangeness of content but rather the dreamer’s awareness of and potential control over that content.
Schredl’s research on the effects of lucid dream induction on dream characteristics found that participating in induction training (whether reality testing, wake-up-back-to-bed, or dream diary keeping) can affect not only lucid dream frequency but also other dream variables. In a study of 110 participants across three induction conditions and a control group, Schredl and colleagues found that induction training influenced dream length, emotional tone, and external ratings of lucidity, suggesting that focusing on dreams during induction may have broader effects on dream phenomenology.7
Long-term effects and skill development
A distinctive contribution of Schredl’s work is his investigation of the long-term effects of lucid dream induction training. Using a single-case analysis of an infrequent lucid dreamer who maintained a dream diary over 23 years, Schredl examined whether increased lucid dream frequency persists after training ceases.8 The participant attended a workshop on lucid dreaming in February 1996 and practiced reality checks (asking himself 5 to 10 times daily whether he was dreaming and scanning the environment for incongruences) for several months before discontinuing the technique.
Schredl’s analysis revealed that lucid dreaming is indeed a learnable skill that can be enhanced through training and that increased frequency can persist even after active practice ceases, though the long-term trajectory varies across individuals.8 This finding aligns with anecdotal reports from skilled lucid dreamers and suggests that induction training may produce lasting changes in the capacity for lucidity, not merely temporary effects dependent on ongoing practice.
Measurement reliability and standardization
Schredl has contributed substantially to the standardization of measurement instruments for lucid dreaming research. His development and validation of frequency scales for lucid dreams and nightmares provides researchers with reliable, non-intrusive tools for assessing individual differences.
