Early skepticism was substantial; the phenomenon was long considered esoteric or even superstitious, sometimes grouped with paranormal claims.5 The field underwent a fundamental shift in legitimacy following the pioneering laboratory work of Keith Hearne and Stephen LaBerge in the late 1970s, who demonstrated that lucid dreamers could execute pre-arranged eye movement patterns during REM sleep, providing objective, measurable evidence of the phenomenon.5

Today, lucid dreaming is recognized as an established research domain, with major scientific institutions worldwide conducting investigations and high-ranked journals publishing findings.5 Schredl’s contributions have been central to this legitimization, particularly through his systematic work on prevalence estimation, measurement standardization, and investigation of reported health applications. Measurement and questionnaire development

In online surveys, approximately 80% of participants reported using lucid dreams for hedonistic activities such as flying or sexual experiences. However, 64% also reported using lucid dreams to influence unpleasant dreams or nightmares.5 More specifically, a relatively small percentage of lucid dreams (approximately 6.5%) were dedicated to “physical/mental healing,” yet this application was employed by 40% of lucid dreamers overall.3 The use of lucid dreams for healing purposes was associated with older age, female gender, and higher lucid dream frequency, suggesting that more experienced lucid dreamers are more likely to apply the skill therapeutically.3

Schredl’s survey-based approach captured self-perceived effects rather than objective clinical outcomes. Public perception and scientific legitimacy

Schredl has also examined how lucid dreaming is perceived by the general public and how this perception compares to its status in academic science. This work is particularly relevant given the historical association between lucid dreaming research and parapsychology, which has influenced public attitudes toward the phenomenon.

For much of the twentieth century, lucid dreaming occupied a precarious position in scientific discourse. Early skepticism was pronounced, with the phenomenon sometimes grouped alongside paranormal claims such as telepathy and UFOs, viewed by traditional science as “superstitious nonsense.”5 As recently as 1936, the Journal of Abnormal Psychology published arguments defending lucid dreaming against fellow psychologists who dismissed it as merely daydreaming.5 The legitimization of lucid dreaming as a scientific field accelerated following Hearne and LaBerge’s laboratory demonstrations in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with LaBerge’s findings eventually published in peer-reviewed journals.5

Today, lucid dreaming is an established field of academic study, with research conducted at major scientific institutions worldwide and findings published in high-ranked journals including Nature Neuroscience.5 However, Schredl’s research on public perception revealed that the general public’s understanding of lucid dreaming does not always mirror the scientific consensus.
