Survival evidence and the super-psi hypothesis
Braude’s analysis of survival evidence centered on what he termed the super-psi hypothesis. He argued that if psi can occur at all, then until we have evidence to the contrary, we must assume that it can occur at any level of magnitude or sophistication.1 This position challenged survival researchers to demonstrate why postmortem survival provides a better explanation than living-agent psi for mediumistic and reincarnation cases.
The super-psi challenge to survival research
Braude’s super-psi argument represented a major critical intervention in survival research literature, establishing the super-psi hypothesis as a serious philosophical and empirical problem that survival researchers must confront rather than dismiss. He called for methodological reforms in case investigation toward depth-psychological analysis similar to Eisenbud’s work on the Cagliostro case.1
Case investigations into drop-in communicators fail to probe relevant underlying psychodynamics, Braude argued. Survival researchers typically conduct only surface investigations and rarely examine deep psychological motivations of mediums and sitters. The Cagliostro case demonstrates through Eisenbud’s analysis that mediumistic material can be explained by paranormally-accessed obscure historical sources motivated by sitters’ repressed unconscious desires, without invoking survival.1

Braude addressed metaphysical puzzles about personal identity in relation to survival evidence. Braude identified a rarely-discussed but fundamental conceptual problem: how disembodied postmortem persons could have perspectival awareness of the physical world. Disembodied postmortem individuals cannot ground perspectival sensory experiences in spatial location—the usual basis for perspectival perception in embodied observers. Postmortem awareness cannot be explained as mediated by the medium’s body, an astral body, or telepathic channels alone, since communicators report awareness of information inaccessible to any living person at the time.3
Braude proposed modeling postmortem awareness on clairvoyance (non-perspectival, non-sensory awareness) as a solution, but noted this requires survivalists to accept the reality of refined living-agent psi. The clairvoyance strategy preserves veridical, causally-mediated awareness while avoiding the hallucination/imagination distinction problem. However, survivalists cannot simultaneously defend the survival hypothesis via mediumship evidence and reject living-agent psi as implausible.3
Psychokinesis and physical mediumship
Braude examined theoretical and taxonomic issues in psychokinesis research. He argued that the micro-PK versus macro-PK distinction does not map onto genuine differences in phenomena and serves to obscure the possible continuity of all PK manifestations. Large-scale mediumship phenomena reported by D. D. Home and Eusapia Palladino should be treated as equally important data for PK theory as statistical laboratory effects.5
He investigated contemporary physical mediumship cases, including the Felix Experimental Group. Despite documented use of fraudulent devices in some séances, certain phenomena—particularly table levitations and anomalous object movements—remained difficult to explain through normal means.1011
Mixed mediumship and psychodynamic factors
Braude’s investigations of the Felix Experimental Group documented apparently genuine phenomena in a medium with confirmed fraudulent episodes, arguing that mixed mediumship—where genuine and fraudulent phenomena coexist—requires nuanced investigation that attends to psychological and interpersonal factors rather than simple proof-seeking. What readers need to know about physical mediumship phenomena has as much to do with the personalities involved as with the phenomena themselves. The phenomena reflect the complex, and tortured, underlying psychodynamics of the occasion.11
In his 2014 investigation, Braude observed five table levitations at a sitting in darkness and red light, with the table rising smoothly approximately 18 inches and remaining aloft 2-3 seconds. Cabinet séances produced ectoplasm in red light: substantial material extruded from the medium’s mouth, displaying animated flexing, with formations of arm-like appendages rising with hand-like structures. Two apports appeared in sufficient light with apparent force and sudden appearance inconsistent with manual concealment given visible hands and arm position.10
Memory and trace theory
Braude developed a fundamental critique of memory trace theory. He argued that memory trace theory is fundamentally incoherent and unintelligible, not merely in its current physiological implementations but as a conceptual framework. The notion that memories can be stored as physical traces in the brain confuses representation with structural similarity and cannot coherently explain how disparate triggering events activate the correct memory.2
The conceptual incoherence of trace theory
Memory traces face an inescapable dilemma, Braude argued: either traces require further memory mechanisms to function (infinite regress), or they must rely on intrinsic similarity between trace and memory content, which is logically impossible. Similarity is never intrinsic or context-independent; it requires shifting criteria of relevance. Therefore, the core trace-theoretic appeal to structural isomorphism cannot establish unique representation of memory content.2
Representation cannot be determined solely by an object’s structural or topological features; what something represents depends on its use in context, not on how it is configured. Recent neuroscientific memory research makes no progress on fundamental conceptual problems; it assumes trace storage without examining whether storage is even possible. Trace-theoretic thinking appears in parapsychology (Roll’s psi structures, genetic memory in reincarnation cases, cellular memory in transplant cases) and inherits identical conceptual flaws regardless of substrate or location.2
Telepathy and mental privacy
Braude distinguished between telepathic cognition (knowledge of another’s mental state) and telepathic interaction (influence without knowledge of source). Most ostensible telepathy cases represent telepathic interaction without telepathic cognition—the percipient’s mind is influenced without knowing the source or details of what the agent is thinking.6
In dream telepathy experiments, percipients incorporated target details without recognizing the agent’s role or understanding what the agent was concentrating on. Historical evidence for remote hypnotic induction by Puységur, Janet, Richet, and Vasiliev demonstrates telepathic influence on actions without percipient cognition.6

Braude’s work influenced philosophical discussions of parapsychology and survival evidence. His books and papers were cited in major handbooks and textbooks on parapsychology as providing sophisticated philosophical analysis of core conceptual problems in the field.1412
His editorials in the Journal of Scientific Exploration addressed institutional and methodological issues facing parapsychology. He defended peer review as an imperfect but preferable system, analogous to democracy, and maintained that the journal applied conclusion-independent criteria of scholarly and scientific integrity rather than advancing or excluding particular points of view.8
Braude’s work on Ian Stevenson acknowledged the foundational role Stevenson played in establishing rigorous methodologies for investigating spontaneous cases and survival evidence.
