Debra Katz

Debra Lynne Katz, PhD is a parapsychology researcher, remote viewing practitioner, and founder of the International School of Clairvoyance, profiled at Debra Lynne Katz. Lane (Rhine Research Center) and Michelle Freed-Bulgatz, ran a controlled remote viewing study examining whether the background context surrounding objects in photographic targets affects viewer performance. Project Firefly (2018). Remote Viewing meta-analysis (2023). Katz co-authored, with Patrizio Tressoldi (Science of Consciousness Research Group, University of Padua), the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the remote viewing literature spanning 1974–2022, published in the Journal of Scientific Exploration. Methodology

Katz et al. (2021) used a within-subjects repeated-measures design. Targets were photographic images varying by background context (a manipulated property of the target stimuli). The primary analysis was a repeated-measures ANOVA (RM-ANOVA) on sum-of-ranks scores across background conditions, run across 360 trials with 12 participants. The study was structured to isolate a specific target variable — background context — rather than testing remote viewing ability overall, which makes it a hypothesis-driven experimental design rather than an exploratory demonstration.

Project Firefly (2018) used a naturalistic prediction protocol: 62 participants generated 177 daily aggregate predictions. This is a lower-control design than a laboratory study — the ecological conditions are closer to applied ARV use, but controls over participant selection, blinding, and judging are correspondingly harder to enforce. The outcome metric was hit rate against chance.

The two studies point in different directions. Katz et al. (2021) reports a statistically significant background-condition main effect (p =.01) on sum-of-ranks scores across 360 trials. Project Firefly returns a hit rate of 0.48 against an implied chance baseline, with a raw effect size of −0.02 — a null result, marginally below chance rather than above it.
