Designing the Autoganzfeld System
Berger’s single most consequential technical contribution was designing and building the autoganzfeld — the first fully automated ganzfeld testing system. Implemented at the Psychophysical Research Laboratories (PRL), the system brought target selection, stimulus delivery, blind judging, and data logging under computer control, removing the experimenter-handling variables that had complicated interpretation of earlier manual ganzfeld studies. The landmark 1990 paper by Honorton, Berger, and colleagues reported results from this automated system and compared them against a meta-analysis of earlier manual studies [3]. That comparison became a reference point in methodological discussions about whether procedural controls affect ganzfeld outcomes — making the autoganzfeld not just a piece of hardware but an argument about experimental standards.
Empirical Research Programs
Beyond the ganzfeld work, Berger pursued two notable empirical lines:
- Geomagnetic correlates of psi effect sizes. Working with Michael Persinger, Berger examined whether quieter annual geomagnetic activity was associated with larger standardized effect sizes across six decades of ESP studies [2]. The analysis was explicitly correlational and archival rather than experimental, but it exemplifies his interest in identifying environmental moderators of reported psi effects.
- Psi effects without real-time feedback. At the Science Unlimited Research Foundation, using the PsiLab II platform he had helped develop at PRL, Berger designed experiments pairing subject-gated RNG samples that generated game feedback with simultaneous “silent” samples the subject never observed. Earlier work with Schechter and Honorton had found that personality and self-report measures correlated with never-observed RNG data — a finding Berger used to probe the boundary between real-time and retrocausal psi models. This line of research raised falsifiability questions that remain methodologically relevant regardless of one’s position on the underlying phenomenon.
- Randomization auditing. A later collaboration with Dick Bierman and Richard Broughton re-examined the randomization properties of the PRL autoganzfeld target sequences [1], addressing whether apparent results could be partially explained by non-random target distributions — a technically demanding forensic question that few researchers had the platform-level knowledge to pursue.
Methodological and Forensic Critique
Berger also worked on the critical side of the ledger. His 1989 examination of Susan Blackmore’s psi-experiment database [4] and his critique of the Spinelli dissertation data [5] are examples of forensic auditing applied to claimed psi datasets. His argument in the Blackmore paper — that underpowered studies cannot support conclusions in either direction, positive or negative — became a cited statement of the Type-II / asymmetric-standards problem in parapsychology [4].
