Real Magic (2018) is one of Radin’s four books aimed at audiences beyond academic parapsychology. Its central argument is that phenomena historically labeled “magic” — intention-based influence over physical systems, perception beyond ordinary sensory channels, mind-over-matter effects — correspond to effects that laboratory parapsychology has been quietly accumulating evidence for, and that the dismissal of these phenomena reflects institutional inertia rather than a careful reading of the empirical record. The book’s implications are best understood by tracing them through the four dimensions of Radin’s research record.
Experiments
Radin’s experimental program spans several distinct lines, each of which Real Magic draws on thematically:
- Double-slit optical interference: a series of experiments testing whether directed attention shifts a measurable optical interference pattern; a 2021 paper by Radin and Helané Wahbeh reported exploratory findings after a pre-planned primary analysis found nothing.

Methodology
Across these lines, Radin’s methodological signature includes:
- Physical sensor paradigms (double-slit interferometer, RNG networks, pH meters) as targets for mind-matter interaction, chosen specifically because they are continuously recorded, blinded to the experimenter during runs, and free from the human-judgment ambiguity of forced-choice card tasks.
- Pre-registered and exploratory arms held apart: the 2021 double-slit paper is notable for explicitly titling itself “exploratory evidence” after its pre-planned primary analysis failed to reach significance — an unusual degree of transparency.
- Permutation and bootstrap statistics rather than relying solely on parametric assumptions, used in the GCP New Year’s Eve analysis and in the water pH replication.

A standing methodological question the sources themselves raise: in the water pH work, Radin notes that multiple experimental parameters — field strength, magnetic sequences, water quantity, halo orientation, geomagnetic field — remain poorly specified in the original protocol being replicated, which constrains how tightly the replication can be evaluated.

The evidence table covers a range of outcomes, and the pattern is genuinely mixed — this is worth stating plainly rather than allowing the positive results to set the frame:

The Kauffman (2023) figure — cumulative across 30 double-slit experiments at five laboratories — is the closest thing in the evidence base to multi-site replication data for the paradigm most central to Real Magic‘s physical-world-interaction argument.
Skeptical critiques
The closest grounded critical engagement in the library concerns the experimental program the book draws on. The Radin et al. (2021) study-audit page on this site records that the paper’s own pre-planned primary analysis found nothing, and the authors acknowledged this explicitly — the exploratory results that remained are, by the authors’ own framing, hypothesis-generating rather than confirmatory. Radin himself notes that the water-pH replication was constrained by underspecification in the original protocol, which limits what “replication” can mean in that context.
What the experimental data show. The double-slit paradigm, which is the physical mechanism Real Magic leans on most heavily for its “influence of consciousness on matter” argument, has produced both positive cumulative results across multiple labs and a null pre-planned primary analysis in a single-site study. The GCP New Year’s Eve analysis uses a network not designed as a psi-detection instrument, and the statistical approach (PCA composite at the predicted time point) involves analytic choices Radin documents in a corrigendum correcting an earlier citation error — suggesting the analysis was still being refined after initial publication.
Analysis. The book synthesizes a research program that is ongoing and internally heterogeneous. The strongest single-metric evidence for its core claims comes from cumulative multi-lab double-slit results and GCP analyses with pre-specified time windows. Independent replication outside Radin’s group and outside the original double-slit collaborators has been published for some paradigms (the Kauffman aggregation covers five labs) but the water-pH line explicitly describes itself as a “preliminary” independent replication with acknowledged protocol ambiguities.
