displacement
Displacement in parapsychology research refers to a well-documented phenomenon in ESP experiments in which a subject’s response coincides with a target other than the intended one — typically a target temporally or spatially adjacent to it. Instead of hitting the target aimed at, the subject scores on the card or image immediately before or after it, or in some protocols, on a target from a nearby trial.
Early documentation
The effect was first systematically studied in forced-choice card experiments. J. G. Pratt and Esther Bonney Foster examined this in their work “A Further Study of ESP Displacement in Relation to Hits and Misses” [1], and Edward Bindrim documented “A New Displacement Effect in ESP,” observing that subjects would “miss the target card (or other object) aimed at but to hit the card just ahead of or just following the target” [2]. These early studies appeared in the Journal of Parapsychology in the late 1940s and early 1950s [1][2][4].
Displacement in free-response protocols
The effect has also been observed in free-response settings, including ganzfeld experiments. Julie Milton investigated displacement effects and their relationship to experimental variables—particularly the presence of an agent—as part of her broader research on factors that modulate ESP expression [3]. Her work examined whether agent involvement correlates with within-trial displacement, a question that remains relevant to understanding how ESP targets are encoded or retrieved in the subject’s responses.
Interpretation and significance
Displacement is typically understood as misalignment in time or space rather than as genuine ESP failure. It suggests that ESP information may be reaching the subject but attaching to the wrong temporal or spatial location in the trial sequence or target pool. This is a methodologically important distinction: a displacement hit is evidence of ESP signal, but occurring at an offset; it is not a miss in the sense of no ESP activity, but rather a target-location error.
