Joseph Banks Rhine, PhD
Joseph Banks Rhine, PhD was an American experimental psychologist who founded the Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory and is generally credited with establishing experimental parapsychology as a university-based discipline. Over more than four decades he applied quantitative, statistical methods to extra-sensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK), and he shaped the field’s publishing standards as an editor of the Journal of Parapsychology. A caveat before the specifics: the sources retrieved for this question are thin on Rhine’s own primary data — the two numbered primary papers are both by Louisa E. Rhine, his wife and collaborator, not by J.B. Rhine — so much of what follows on his experiments is drawn from the ESP-Nexus synthesis pages rather than from primary statistics in front of me.
Experiments

Rhine, who ran the Duke program’s large-scale collection and analysis of spontaneous (real-world, non-laboratory) psi cases [1][2], and — a generation later — Sally Rhine Feather, PhD, their daughter, who collaborated with J.B. Methodology
The methodological signature of Rhine’s laboratory program was the attempt to convert claims of psi into quantifiable, statistically testable outcomes:
- Forced-choice design with fixed target sets (Zener cards), allowing hits to be compared against a known chance baseline.
- Scaling and mechanization in the PK work. In the dice studies, Rhine moved from manual cup-throwing to a mechanical throwing apparatus. The stated rationale on the spoke page is that automation standardized force, angle, and trajectory — reducing trial-to-trial noise and removing experimenter throwing bias — and that an effect surviving mechanical throwing would argue against ordinary motor control as the explanation. Varying dice size and number was itself a control, testing whether any effect depended on the physical properties of the objects.
- Editorial standardization. As editor of the Journal of Parapsychology, Rhine helped set norms for experimental design, statistical reporting, and methodological transparency in the field.
For the spontaneous-case work associated with the Duke lab, Louisa E. Rhine’s approach was to collect and classify large volumes of reported experiences — roughly a thousand cases in the analysis of subjective forms — sorting them by form (e.g., hallucinatory versus intuitive, waking versus dream) [1]. She herself framed this collection as a response to a research problem: laboratory subjects could not tell when their responses were correct, so spontaneous cases were mined for clues on how to get better control of psi [2].
Data
The retrieved sources do not put Rhine’s own trial counts, hit rates, z-scores, or p-values in front of me, so I cannot state specific figures for his ESP or PK series without risking fabrication. What the synthesis pages assert qualitatively:
- Forced-choice card series were reported as producing above-chance results across multiple independent studies.
- Distance studies were reported as showing no significant decline in performance with increased sender–receiver separation.
- The dice PK program was reported as producing measurable effects across all three dice configurations (six, twelve, twenty-four) and the sixty-dice extreme, with the effect surviving mechanical throwing and dice-size variation.

Rhine spontaneous-case analyses that are in the numbered sources, the material is descriptive/categorical rather than inferential-statistical: of roughly one thousand spontaneous cases, experiences expressed through the sense organs were dominated by vision, with hearing and smell less frequent [1]. No effect sizes or significance tests attach to that classification.
Skeptical critiques
