Two features of these data are worth stating plainly. First, the Palmer–Neppe TLD result was not robust: a temporal-lobe-dysfunction effect on subjective-ESP scores that reached p < .05 disappeared once gender was entered as a covariate, and gender itself became the dominant predictor [5]. Second, these are exploratory analyses in a clinical population, so the p-values are best read as hypothesis-generating rather than confirmatory [5]. The memory-and-ESP figures are positive across the combined series Palmer analyzed [4], but he himself notes a confound — the very short memorization windows in some studies could have made the “memory” test function like a second ESP test, which would make the positive correlation uninformative about memory per se [4].
