Several features of this data set deserve attention:
- Null primary outcomes predominate. The ganzfeld condition in Simmonds-Moore and Holt (2007) and the overall psi task in Sherwood et al. (2005) both produced non-significant, near-zero or slightly below-chance primary effects [4][6]. The primary psi hypothesis in Holt (2007) also did not reach significance [3].
- Hit rates diverge from z-scores. In Simmonds-Moore and Holt (2007), the ganzfeld hit rate of 23.1% fell below the 25% mean chance expectation, while the waking hit rate of 30.8% sat above it — yet neither z-score was significant, and the two conditions did not differ significantly from each other [4].
- Exploratory correlates produced significant findings where the primary did not. In Holt (2007), two post-hoc correlations reached significance: use of ideas perceived as coming from “beyond the self” was associated with psi-missing (rho = −.429, p = .018, two-tailed), and cognitive flexibility/originality was associated with effect magnitude (rho = −.535, p = .004, two-tailed) [3]. In the 2020 LI study, non-linear creative cognition significantly moderated performance across sending conditions (z = −2.30, p = .02), even though the primary psi-LI hypothesis was not supported [1].
- Moderator signals are specific. The 2020 study found a conventional latent inhibition effect (significant) but no significant extension of that effect into the psi-sending condition. Non-linear creative cognition emerged as a moderator, but creativity and positive schizotypy did not moderate the psi-LI effect as hypothesized [1].
- Experimenter-level variation. In Sherwood et al. (2005), correlations between receiver tension and target ratings ran in opposite directions for different experimenters: positive for Holt and Sherwood (r = .281 and .269 respectively), negative for Roe (r = −.198) [6].

Skeptical critiques
The sources retrieved for this question do not include a published critique of Holt’s work by a named external critic. What the studies themselves record, however, is relevant here.
What the studies’ own authors flag. Holt (2007) notes that the artist sample in that study did not score higher than controls on belief in the paranormal, unusual experiences, or emotional creativity — variables on which artists typically outscore non-artists — raising the question of whether the artist group was adequately representative of the population that theory predicts should be psi-conducive [3]. The authors of the 2020 LI study observe directly that the hypothesis linking psychometric variables to enhanced LI and psi-effects with a complex masking task load was not supported, and that significant moderator effects found in exploratory analyses (non-linear creative cognition) were not pre-specified [1]. The 2005 interpersonal study’s authors note that the overall psi effect was non-significant, and that experimenter-level patterns in correlations with receiver tension were inconsistent across the three experimenters — a pattern the paper acknowledges without resolving [6].
What the experimental data show. Across Holt’s collaborations, the primary psi outcomes are largely null, while significant effects appear in exploratory correlational analyses [1][3][4][6]. The distinction between confirmatory and exploratory results is material: a significant moderator found post-hoc carries less evidential weight than a pre-specified primary outcome.
Analysis. The pattern across these studies — null primaries alongside significant exploratory correlates — is a recurring methodological tension in individual-differences research in parapsychology. Pre-specified replication of the moderator effects (non-linear creative cognition, psi-missing in those scoring high on “beyond-the-self” ideation) in independent samples has not been reported in the sources retrieved here.
