Robert L. Methodology

Free-response ESP training study [1]. Participants undertook two preliminary sessions, twelve training sessions, and one follow-up session, with formal ESP testing embedded in each training session. Target packs were randomly assigned before the study began by a person not otherwise involved, using published weather data as an entry point into a standard random-number table. Lab and remote ESP tests were counterbalanced. The study was designed to account for individual differences in learning style, and participants were assigned to either an imagery-exercise condition or a concentration-exercise condition.

Ganzfeld study [4]. One hundred video clips grouped into 25 target sets of four were stored digitally and played back from hard drive. Personality measures (extraversion and others from Saucier’s inventory) and a Psychic Influence Form (PIF) were collected to test predicted correlates of ganzfeld success.

DMILS Bali studies [3]. The software was designed by Paul Stevens and was an updated version of the program used in the earlier Brady and Morris Edinburgh study. Help and Control periods were couplet-randomized via a pseudo-randomized algorithm ensuring equal numbers of each condition. A few patterns stand out across this set. The free-response training study [1] returned a non-significant primary outcome alongside a suggestive but non-significant advantage for imagery-based exercises and a non-significant decline across sessions — meaning the training intervention did not produce the improvement that practice-based popular accounts would predict. The ganzfeld study with a creative population [4] reached significance on the primary hit rate and on the extraversion correlation, but the artists sub-group advantage, though numerically larger, did not reach significance on its own. Skeptical critiques

What critics argue. Morris himself, in [5], documents the key methodological objection that ran through this period: the Edinburgh automated ganzfeld procedure — which followed on from earlier autoganzfeld work — was itself challenged on procedural grounds. He notes this directly: “that automated Ganzfeld procedure as well was challenged.” He also documents in [6] that parapsychology has been labelled a pseudo-science by public commentators, and in [5] identifies a cluster of structural difficulties the field faces including problems generating and testing theory-based hypotheses and working with complex, open systems.

What the experimental data show. The Edinburgh ganzfeld follow-up described in [5] introduced greater separation between sender and receiver, two sets of videos, and removal of the experimenter from the room containing video equipment to close off sensory leakage possibilities. Morris, Dalton, Delanoy, and Watt (1995) reported this improved-protocol study. The DMILS Bali work [3] also records that earlier experimenter-effect studies produced three chance results before a fourth produced significant positive results (ES = .33) specifically associated with experimenter attitude, which the authors note as a complicating factor for interpretation.

Analysis. The challenge to the Edinburgh autoganzfeld procedure is noted in Morris’s own methodological writing [5] but the specific published critique and its authors are not identified in the retrieved excerpts — so the exact form of that challenge cannot be characterized here beyond what Morris himself reports.
