Palmer’s review combined z-statistics from six series (including subsequent replications by Kanthamani and others beyond Feather’s original work) using the Stouffer method, yielding a Stouffer Z of 2.82 (p < .005) for the RC/RW contrast across that broader literature [4]. What the experimental data show. Feather’s own combined result across three follow-up series was statistically significant (p = .012), with positive correlations in every series [4]. However, Palmer’s review notes that a replication attempt by Gambale (1976) failed to replicate the effect [4]. The broader Kanthamani series extended the paradigm at FRNM, and Palmer’s Stouffer combination across six series (including those beyond Feather’s original work) reached Z = 2.82, p < .005, for the RC/RW contrast — though that aggregate spans multiple researchers and protocols, not Feather’s series alone [4].

Analysis. The confound Palmer and Rao identify — that a 15-second exposure to ESP symbols may itself constitute an ESP trial — was not resolved within Feather’s original design. Gambale (1976) attempted replication and did not obtain the effect [4]. Whether the positive correlation in Feather’s series reflects a genuine memory–ESP relationship, an artifact of the brief exposure window, or both remains an open question in Palmer’s 2006 review, which is the most detailed treatment of this literature in the retrieved sources.
