Why a switch is the interesting unit

A binary on/off switch is the smallest possible actuator. If psi can reliably move one bit — flip one gate — then in principle almost any downstream system can be driven, because modern machinery is ultimately controlled by bits. That’s what makes the switch a more consequential thought-experiment than, say, “bending a spoon”: it’s a general-purpose interface, not a party trick. Assistive technology and accessibility

The most humane near-term application. A reliable mental switch is functionally a brain–computer interface that needs no implant, no electrodes, no calibration hardware. For people with severe motor impairment — locked-in syndrome, late-stage ALS, high spinal injury — the ability to toggle a communication device, call for help, or drive a speech synthesizer by intention alone would be transformative. This is the same problem invasive BCIs are trying to solve; a psi switch would be a non-invasive substitute.

Communication in bandwidth-starved environments

A switch is a Morse key. Two states plus timing is enough to encode language. If the channel were not electromagnetic, it would be immune to jamming, signal-loss, and the physical barriers that stop conventional signals — potentially useful for deep-underwater, deep-underground, or deep-space contexts where ordinary transmission is degraded or impossibly slow. (This is precisely the “quiet channel” logic that motivated Cold-War-era interest in psi.)

Random-number / systems seeding

If the effect operates as a subtle statistical bias on otherwise random systems — the mind-matter-interaction paradigm Radin worked in directly ^[2] — then the “switch” is less a crisp toggle than an influence on probabilistic outputs. That points to different applications: influencing stochastic processes where a small nudge compounds, rather than deterministic control.

Safety interlocks and intention-verified controls

A control that responds only to focused, directed intention could serve as a deadman’s-switch or intent-confirmation layer — a system that will not activate unless a human is genuinely, attentively committing to the action, which is hard to fake and hard to trigger accidentally.

The honest limits of the speculation

• Reliability is everything. Laboratory psi effects, where reported, tend to be small statistical departures over many trials, not on-demand single-shot control. A switch that works 51% of the time is a research finding; a switch that works 99.9% of the time is an actuator. The applications above quietly assume the latter, which is a very large assumption the evidence in front of me does not establish.
