What is the evidence for dream telepathy?

Coverage note: The ESP-Nexus library’s share of the published literature on dream telepathy has not been measured. What follows summarizes what the library holds — treat it as a sample, not a settled account of the field. The studies skew toward work by a small number of research groups, and the picture may look different once broader coverage is measured.

Dream Telepathy: What the Evidence Shows

Dream telepathy is the proposed transfer of information from a waking sender to a sleeping receiver, such that the receiver’s dream content matches a target the sender is focused on. The most systematic laboratory work was conducted at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn from 1962 to 1978. The Maimonides Dream Lab page covers that program in depth.

The Maimonides Program and Early Meta-Analyses

Child (1985), as reviewed by Sherwood, concluded from the Maimonides transcripts that dream content and associations tended to resemble the randomly chosen target more than the other pictures in the pool — describing the outcome as “clear.” A meta-analysis of 450 Maimonides trials found a positive result. Steinkamp and Thouless (2017) extended this to a larger set of 50 dream-ESP studies and applied both classical and Bayesian analysis, finding statistical evidence for a dream-ESP effect. Their analysis also found no significant trend for z-scores to increase or decrease as the number of studies grew (Kendall’s tau-b was non-significant).

The Broader Evidence Base in the Library

The evidence table below spans 25 studies and 26 result rows. Because the studies use different outcome metrics — raw hit rates and standardized effect sizes — these cannot be pooled into a single overall figure. The two families of results must be read separately.

A note on the Johnstad (2020) row: that study reports a prevalence proportion (how often psychedelic users retrospectively described telepathic experiences), not a controlled experiment, and is not directly comparable to the others.

Unsettled Signals (Required Disclosure)

The evidence table carries two explicit unsettled signals that must be stated plainly:

  • Direction disagreement: Not all studies point the same way. Six result rows report null or below-chance outcomes — Schmidt (2009) Study 1, Rey (2010), Vernon (2020), and Stedall (2025) are the clearest cases. Stedall (2025), a preregistered test with 604 trials and 117 participants, returned a hit rate of 0.486 with p = .76 — a clean null on its primary hypothesis.
  • Heterogeneity: The effect sizes reported across studies span a wide range — from near-zero (Sheldrake 2009, d = 0.03) to large (Silberstein 2024, d = 0.85) — and much of the positive literature comes from a single research group.
Psychoanalytic and Theoretical Perspectives

Aragno (2013) approaches dream telepathy from a psychoanalytic angle, arguing that deeply unconscious, involuntary mirroring and emotional contagion phenomena — supported by contemporary neurobiology — provide a biological substrate within which dream telepathy could operate as a natural rather than anomalous process. This is a theoretical framing, not an experimental result, and it sits outside the mainstream of controlled laboratory research.

Skeptical Critiques

What critics argue. Steinkamp and Thouless (2017) conducted a detailed methodological audit of the 50-study corpus. Their analysis examined whether studies that included REM monitoring, used independent judges, or varied the number of response choices produced systematically different outcomes. They also tested whether effect sizes inflated as a function of study-design looseness — a standard file-drawer and quality-confound critique.

What the experimental data show. Steinkamp and Thouless (2017) found no significant relationship between z-score magnitude and the number of response choices available (Kendall’s tau-b non-significant, p = .713), and no significant temporal trend suggesting accumulation bias. Sherwood (2003) noted that some post-Maimonides studies produced below-chance (psi-missing) results and that small-sample designs with only two judges — including the participant and experimenter — reduce the independence of evaluation. The Stedall (2025) preregistered null with 604 trials is the clearest recent case of a well-powered study that did not replicate the positive pattern.

Analysis. The Maimonides program established the laboratory paradigm and produced results that Child (1985) described as clearly positive; subsequent meta-analyses by Steinkamp and Thouless (2017) extended that finding to a broader corpus. At the same time, independent replications outside the original Maimonides and Sheldrake groups — Schmidt (2009), Rey (2010), Vernon (2020), Stedall (2025) — have returned nulls more often than positive results. Silberstein (2024) reported a large effect in a very small sample (N = 10), which requires replication in a larger design before its magnitude can be interpreted. The concentration of positive findings within one research program, and the absence of a consistent positive signal from independent groups, is the central unresolved question the existing data do not settle.
