Robert L. In the ganzfeld work, he emphasized physical separation between experimenter, sender, and receiver — and between the experimenter and the video-playback equipment — to eliminate conventional cueing [5]. He described the Edinburgh lab’s ganzfeld procedure as designed with “greater separation between the sender and the receiver” and with the experimenter removed from the video equipment room entirely [5].

In the free-response training study with Delanoy and Watt, the design accommodated individual differences in learning style and preferences — an unusual attention to person-level variation — and the study was explicitly framed as exploratory rather than a formal evaluation, with participants self-selected from a pool who had independently contacted the KPU [1].

The word-association study illustrates a pattern Morris’s team returned to repeatedly: a significant result with one experimenter-agent and a null result with another, with the difference between agents itself non-significant [2]. The training study showed the kind of decline effect — positive early, then reversal — that Morris himself cited as a recurring methodological challenge [1] [5].

Skeptical critiques

What critics argue. Morris himself documented, in his methodological writing, that the automated ganzfeld procedure developed at the Psychophysical Research Laboratories was challenged on methodological grounds, and that Edinburgh’s own follow-up — designed with improved separation and other controls — was itself subsequently challenged [5]. He cited these challenges without identifying the challengers by name in the retrieved excerpt, but the pattern he describes — sequential challenge and protocol revision — is the substantive critique: that even improved ganzfeld procedures have not escaped methodological objection.

Steinkamp, Milton, and Morris (1998) — a meta-analysis Morris co-authored — examined 22 study pairs from 1935–1997 comparing precognition and clairvoyance, and reported no systematic relationship between study outcome and eight indices of research quality. The agent-specific effect in the word-association study was not followed up within that paper, leaving open whether the SW result would replicate with an independent experimenter.
