Boccuzzi and his colleagues worked to ensure that mediums could not use demographic information, prior knowledge of common names or life experiences, or subtle behavioral cues from experimenters to construct plausible readings. Phenomenology of mediumistic states

Beyond measuring the accuracy of mediumistic information, Boccuzzi has contributed to understanding the subjective experience of mediums during readings. In a quantitative phenomenological study, he and colleagues assessed the conscious experiences of mediums using the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI), a validated instrument for measuring dimensions of altered consciousness.1

The study involved ten Windbridge Certified Research Mediums who participated in three counterbalanced conditions: blinded readings for living targets, blinded readings for deceased targets, and a control condition. Participants completed the PCI at baseline and after each condition. The results revealed that both types of readings produced significantly elevated hypnoidal state scores (a measure of trance-like consciousness) compared to baseline and control conditions. This finding suggests that mediumistic performance is consistently associated with a particular altered state of consciousness, characterized by reduced volitional control and increased absorption.

Both reading conditions also produced significantly higher scores on several PCI dimensions, including altered time sense, imagery, imagery amount, and direction of attention. These phenomenological markers suggest that mediumistic states involve a distinctive pattern of consciousness in which the medium’s attention is directed inward, time perception is altered, and mental imagery is prominent. The consistency of these phenomenological signatures across different types of readings indicates that mediumship may involve a recognizable state of consciousness that can be objectively measured.

Notably, the dimension of “love” showed a significant difference between the two reading conditions. Readings for deceased targets were associated with significantly higher love scores than readings for living targets.1 This finding is intriguing because it suggests that mediums may experience qualitatively different emotional states depending on whether they believe they are communicating with the deceased or providing psychic information about the living. The higher love scores in deceased-target readings could reflect the emotional significance of communicating with departed loved ones, or it could represent a phenomenological marker of a different type of psi process.

Survival psi versus somatic psi

A key theoretical contribution of Boccuzzi’s work has been the distinction between two types of psi that may operate in mediumship: survival psi and somatic psi.1 Survival psi refers to the hypothetical ability to access information from deceased individuals, which would support the survival of consciousness after death. Somatic psi refers to psychic abilities that operate in the present, such as telepathy or clairvoyance, and does not require the survival hypothesis.

In the quantitative phenomenological study, Boccuzzi and colleagues used readings for deceased targets to represent survival psi and readings for living targets to represent somatic psi. This framework allowed them to compare the phenomenology and accuracy of the two processes within the same experimental design. The finding that mediums could accurately distinguish between readings for living and deceased targets in 74% of cases suggests that these two processes may indeed be phenomenologically distinct.1

The differential correlations between phenomenological dimensions and accuracy in the two conditions further support this distinction. For readings involving living targets, accuracy was negatively correlated with imagery vividness and absorption, suggesting that excessive mental imagery or absorption may interfere with accurate psychic information reception about the living. In contrast, accuracy for deceased targets showed no significant correlations with phenomenological dimensions, implying that the process of communicating with the deceased may operate according to different principles than psychic readings for the living.1

This theoretical framework has important implications for understanding mediumship. If survival psi and somatic psi are indeed distinct processes with different phenomenological signatures and different relationships to accuracy, then mediumship research must account for these differences when designing experiments and interpreting results. Boccuzzi’s work suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach to mediumship research may obscure important distinctions in the underlying mechanisms.
