The study of mediumship has historically focused on information accuracy, whether mediums can produce verifiable facts about deceased persons under controlled conditions. However, Boccuzzi recognized that understanding mediumship requires equal attention to the subjective experience of the medium and the physiological processes accompanying claimed communication. The brain does not treat communication with the deceased as equivalent to ordinary conversation or imagination. Whether this reflects genuine contact with discarnate entities or represents a distinctive altered state of consciousness induced by the medium’s belief and expectation remains an open question. The presence of hematological correlates suggests either that mediumistic experience involves profound psychosomatic effects, or that the process of receiving anomalous information engages physiological systems in ways not yet fully understood.
The hematological approach also raises methodological questions about the nature of the mediumistic state. Some mediums might enter a state of heightened physiological arousal, reflected in elevated heart rate and skin conductance. Others might show parasympathetic dominance, reflected in decreased arousal. Still others might show distinctive patterns of immune activation. These individual differences in physiological response could reflect different mediumistic styles or abilities, or could indicate that different mediums employ different mechanisms to access anomalous information. Systematic documentation of these patterns across multiple mediums could eventually reveal whether certain physiological signatures are associated with more accurate information reception.
Integrated methodology and future directions
The strength of Boccuzzi’s approach lies in its integration of phenomenological, electrocortical, and hematological data. Rather than treating these as separate lines of evidence, he has developed protocols that simultaneously collect data across all three domains, allowing for detailed correlational analysis. The research also has implications for understanding the relationship between consciousness and physiology in anomalous phenomena. If mediumistic experience involves genuine contact with discarnate entities, this contact must somehow be mediated by the medium’s brain and body.
