Charles Honorton — Experiments and Data
Before drawing conclusions from the evidence below, two qualifications apply. First, the library’s share of the published literature on Honorton’s work has not been measured, so what follows is a summary of what the ESP-Nexus library holds rather than a settled account of the field. Second, the five evidence rows in the structured table span different, non-comparable metrics — standardized effect sizes, a raw hit rate, and a combined p-value — so no single pooled figure can be offered across all of them.
Honorton’s profile page covers the full arc of his career. This answer works through his experimental record, methodology, the quantitative picture the library supports, and the critical debate around it.
Experiments
Honorton’s laboratory work spanned roughly a quarter-century and ran across several institutional homes: the Maimonides Medical Center Dream Laboratory, the Psychophysical Research Laboratories (PRL) in Princeton, and, at his death, the emerging Edinburgh group under the Koestler Chair.
Early work — dreams, special subjects, and attention states. At Maimonides, Honorton worked on dream-telepathy studies and on special-subject investigations. He documented observational work with Felicia Parise, a subject who reportedly demonstrated psychokinetic effects with small objects in the laboratory, and whose sessions Honorton filmed and described in a firsthand account. This period established the theoretical frame he would carry forward: that anomalous information transfer is more detectable when ordinary sensory and cognitive activity is quieted.
Ganzfeld corpus development and the 1978 replication tally. By 1978, Honorton had compiled a corpus of ganzfeld studies from multiple independent laboratories. His pooled analysis covered 26 studies across 11 labs and approximately 1,000 sessions.
The 1985 meta-analysis and the Hyman–Honorton exchange. Honorton’s 1985 meta-analytic response to Ray Hyman’s critique examined a broader corpus of ganzfeld work. The joint communiqué that followed — co-signed by both men — established specific methodological standards for future ganzfeld research.
The autoganzfeld program at PRL. The computer-automated ganzfeld system — designed and built by Rick E. Berger (Berger & Honorton, 1986), with Honorton directing the PRL research program — ran 11 experiments meeting the jointly authored standards. The full database, including every session since the system’s 1983 inauguration, was reported by Bem and Honorton in a 1994 Psychological Bulletin paper.
Artistically gifted populations. Schlitz and Honorton (1992) tested 20 undergraduates from the Juilliard School using the autoganzfeld system, examining whether exceptional performers showed elevated psi performance.
Predictor studies. A posthumously published paper examined four variables — prior psi experience, reported psi experiences, Myers-Briggs personality type (FP), and practice of mental disciplines such as meditation — as predictors of initial ganzfeld performance, comparing PRL series with an independent Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man (FRNM) replication.
Precognition forced-choice corpus. Honorton also co-analyzed a large corpus of forced-choice precognition experiments spanning 1935–1987.
Methodology
Honorton’s methodological contributions were as significant as his empirical results.
The ganzfeld procedure. The technique reduces patterned sensory input — halved ping-pong balls over the receiver’s eyes, white noise through headphones — to create a state of sensory attenuation. Honorton framed this as deliberately engineering psi-conducive conditions rather than inducing total sensory removal. The free-response format asked receivers to describe mental imagery while a sender concentrated on a randomly selected target; receivers then judged the target from a set (typically four alternatives).
The autoganzfeld system. The computer-automated system controlled target selection, randomization, and the judging interface, removing the experimenter from those steps. Dynamic video-clip targets were added alongside static images, on the rationale that emotionally engaging, moving stimuli would better sustain a sender’s attention.
The joint communiqué standards. Following the Hyman–Honorton exchange, the communiqué issued specific recommendations covering randomization procedures, judging and feedback protocols, control of multiple analyses, documentation, and meta-analytic evaluation of research quality. The autoganzfeld program was explicitly designed to satisfy these standards.
Inclusion of all sessions. Bem and Honorton (1994) emphasized that every session completed since the autoganzfeld system’s inauguration was included in their report — pilot and ongoing studies alike — specifically to forestall a file-drawer objection.
Predictor pre-specification. The novice-predictor paper compared performance across three independent series (PRL-1, PRL-2, and the FRNM replication), examining four variables whose combinations were assessed in both four-predictor and three-predictor models.
Data
The five evidence rows in the structured table are the library’s audited quantitative ground truth for this question. Because the rows use different metrics, they are presented in a table for comparison but not pooled into a single figure.

All five rows are directionally positive. The effect sizes where reported — Cohen’s h of 0.29 across the 39-study combined database, and a proportion-index ES of 0.59 in the autoganzfeld primary pool — differ substantially in scale, which reflects both the different metrics and different scopes of analysis. The z=12.13 figure for the 62-investigator cumulation is a cumulative statistic across a very large corpus and is not a single-study effect size. No null or below-chance rows appear in the library’s holdings for this question, though the corpus-coverage caveat above means that absence should not be read as evidence that none exist in the broader literature.
No trend-over-time chart is rendered here because the rows do not carry at least four results on one comparable standardized metric with publication years that would support a fitted trend.

Skeptical critiques
What critics argue. Hyman (1985) — in his critical appraisal of the ganzfeld corpus that preceded the joint communiqué — argued that the experiments as a group fell short on target randomization, control of sensory leakage, and multiple testing, and that methodological flaws covaried with study outcomes: studies with more procedural weaknesses tended to show larger effects.
What the experimental data show. Honorton’s meta-analytic response disputed the flaw–outcome correlation and the multiple-analysis adjustments Hyman applied. Bem and Honorton (1994) noted that their own analysis of the effects of flaws on study outcomes “lends no support to the hypothesis that ganzfeld research results are a significant function of the set of flaw variables”. The joint communiqué itself — co-signed by both Hyman and Honorton — acknowledged an overall significant effect in the database that the two agreed was not reasonably explained by selective reporting alone, while still calling for improved standards in future work.
Analysis. Hyman and Honorton reached an unusual co-authored agreement: both accepted that the existing database showed an overall positive effect; they disagreed about the degree to which methodological shortcomings could account for it. The communiqué’s methodological standards were then built into the autoganzfeld design. The autoganzfeld database reported by Bem and Honorton (1994) was intended to address those standards — but Honorton died in 1992, before independent replication outside the original PRL group had been published. The Edinburgh replication effort he was establishing at his death remained the next step that was not completed under his direction.
