What did the 1986 Joint Communique between Honorton and Hyman conclude, and what did each side concede?
The 1986 Hyman–Honorton Joint Communiqué
The Joint Communiqué [1][2] emerged from the exchange of competing meta-analyses published in 1985, in which Ray Hyman’s critical reanalysis of the ganzfeld corpus argued that experimental flaws covaried with study outcomes, and Honorton’s meta-analytic response disputed that conclusion. Rather than continuing that adversarial exchange, the two co-authored a joint statement — drafted across four revisions — that identified what they agreed on, named what they still disputed, and specified the standards future work would need to meet.
What both sides agreed on
The most-quoted passage from the communiqué is reproduced across multiple sources [3][5][6]:
> “We agree that there is an overall significant effect in this database that cannot reasonably be explained by selective reporting or multiple analysis.”
That is a substantial concession from both directions. It meant:
- The ganzfeld database showed a statistically reliable overall effect.
- The effect could not be dismissed as an artifact of file-drawer suppression of null results.
- The effect could not be explained away by capitalizing on multiple analyses within individual studies.
They also agreed that the existing studies had methodological shortcomings — on target randomization, control of sensory cues, and documentation standards — serious enough that the existing database alone could not settle the question of whether the effect constituted evidence for psi [1][2].
What each side conceded
Hyman’s concessions were the more striking, given his role as the skeptical critic. He acknowledged that the overall effect in the database was real and statistically significant, and that it could not be explained by the two artifact classes he had most prominently raised — selective reporting and multiple analysis. This was a meaningful retreat from a purely dismissive position.
Honorton’s concessions were methodological. He accepted that the existing studies fell short on several design dimensions — adequate randomization of targets, guarding against sensory leakage, and documentation rigorous enough to rule out procedural confounds. By signing the communiqué, he committed to a higher standard for future work rather than defending the existing corpus as sufficient.
What remained unresolved
They continued to disagree on the fundamental interpretive question: whether the demonstrated effect constituted genuine evidence for psi. The communiqué did not resolve that dispute — it suspended it pending better evidence [1][2][4]. As Williams (2016) summarizes it, their joint position was that “the best way to resolve the controversy between us is to await the outcome of future ganzfeld psi experiments” conducted under the jointly agreed standards [4].
The methodological standards they set
The communiqué specified what future experiments would need to do: automated target selection and sequencing to eliminate experimenter influence, proper duplicate prevention in target pools, strict sensory attenuation controls, documentation adequate for independent replication, and pre-specified statistical analysis.
